The “Pride of Oceanside” coming for a visit

The Jets are looking for a veteran QB to backup Chad Pennington and the top name on their list is Long Island native Jay Fiedler who will visit this week. The Jets are looking for a veteran QB to backup Chad Pennington and the top name on their list is Long Island native Jay Fiedler who will visit this week.

Fiedler, 33, the journeyman nine year veteran from Oceanside who was released from the Jets’ bitter rival Dolphins last month in a salary cap move, could be a perfect fit for the new Jets offense under Mike Heimerdinger. Fiedler has a strong arm and for the most part doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. He has also played in the AFC East for the past five years and is very familiar with the Jets' opponents. Also, the unsure status of Pennington’s shoulder after rotator cuff surgery in February makes it essential that the Jets sign a tested veteran. The Jets current backup, third year QB Brooks Bollinger has showed promise but he’s unproven.

It looked like Fiedler was a lock to sign with the Giants earlier this week but the G-Men instead chose former Bears starter Jim Miller to back up Eli Manning. Fiedler is also scheduled to meet with Chicago this week but reports say that playing with his hometown Jets intrigues him. He will visit Hempstead on Thursday or Friday and should make a decision by the end of the weekend.

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS: The Coles/Moss trade should be completed by Wednesday when Coles gets his physical by the Jets. Moss had his physical with the Redskins yesterday and passed with no problems. Reports say that in addition to the remaining $5MM Coles’ got from his original Redskins $13MM signing bonus, an extension he signed with the Jets as part of the trade will guarantee him an additional $8MM in bonuses.

Toby Gowin, who was the Jets punter last season signed with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday. Gowin played one season for the Jets and was disappointing. Former Australian football star Benjamin Graham and six year NFL veteran Micah Knorr who played the last three seasons with Denver are currently on the Jets roster.

-LI Law? Various sources are reporting that the Jets are speaking to the agents of former Pats All-Pro CB Ty Law. Law’s bargaining power is not optimal due to the fact that the foot he broke last season is not fully recovered. Law underwent surgery in January to repair the injury and is just now starting rehabilitation. Law was released by New England last month in a salary cap move. His release saved the Pats $9MM in salary cap space. He likely will not be signed by any team until he can demonstrate that his foot is fully healed.

-The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is reporting that the Jets may sign Seahawks DT Rocky Bernard to an offer sheet. The 6’3” 293 three year veteran from Texas A&M had 39 tackles and 3.5 sacks for Seattle last season. The Jets would have to compensate the Seahawks with a fifth round pick if they signed him to an offer sheet that wasn’t matched.

-Speaking of restricted free agents, the Denver Post reported today that it’s likely that the Broncos will match the $12.5MM offer sheet that the Jets signed TE Jeb Putzier to last week. Another possibility is that Denver may ask the Jets for higher compensation in lieu of letting him go. Right now, if they don’t match the offer they will be compensated with a sixth round pick by NY.

-If the Jets don’t get Putzier, there are reports that they may pursue veteran FA TE Ken Dilger. Dilger, a ten year veteran was with the Bucs last season where he had 39 catches and 3 TD’s.

Redskins FA CB Fred Smoot, who some reported was on the Jets radar, signed on Tuesday with the Minnesota Vikings.
