The Jets started getting their rookies locked up by announcing the signing of their first 2005 draft pick, sixth round RB Cedric Houston. The Jets announced today they have signed sixth-round pick running back Cedric Houston and released quarterback Bill Whittemore.

Houston, a 6-0, 220-pound University of Tennessee product, was selected in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft with a pick obtained from the Oakland Raiders. Houston currently sits fifth all-time on the Volunteers’ leading rusher list with 2,634 yards and 17 touchdowns in 49 games played with 27 starts. He also recorded 39 receptions for 369 yards (9.5 avg.) and a score in his four seasons with Tennessee.

Houston has been sidelined from off season team activities due to a thyroid conditon that is projected to be under control by training camp. The team knew of this condition prior to drafting him.

Whittemore signed with the Jets on May 23, 2005 after originally entering the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent on May 18, 2004. The University of Kansas product was waived by Atlanta on July 1, 2004 before spending a season with the Arena Football League’s Nashville Kats.

The Jets’ roster currently stands at 87 with training camp beginning on Friday, July 29, 2005.
