ALSO: The NFL Network will broadcast LIVE from today's afternoon practice. Rookie S Kerry Rhodes leaped up in the air and came down with his first interception of training camp. That play during a 7-on-7 drill typified the morning practice as the defense once again out shined the offense.

Rhodes, the Jets fourth round draft pick, is competing for the backup free safety spot with Rashad Washington.

While Rhodes impressed with the interception, he was beat later along with CB Pete Hunter on a long TD pass from QB Brooks Bollinger to WR Brock Ralph.

Second-round draft pick CB Justin Miller also had an interception on a pass intended for WR Justin McCareins during 11-on-11 drills.

The team practiced a lot of situational drills this morning including one-on-ones inside the red zone with QB’s Jay Fiedler and Bollinger switching off the throws.

Fiedler and Bollinger struggled overthrowing their receivers numerous times. Fiedler who spent the last five seasons with the Dolphins would not blame his inaccuracy on the heat. “This is cool compared to down there (Miami),” Fiedler said.

One of the more intriguing match-ups during the one-on-ones was WR Laverneus Coles against Miller. The first time, Coles did not turn around in time and the pass went off his back in the end zone. There would not be a repeat of that the second time as Fiedler threw a perfect ball to Coles in the back corner of the end zone, beating Miller.

The team ended the morning session with a two-minute drill as Fiedler, Bollinger, and fourth-string QB Kevin Eakin each got a shot from their own 40 with 1:49 left and their team trailing 7-6.

Fiedler went three-and-out. Bollinger was able to complete a first down to WR Jerricho Cotchery, but could not get another one as CB Oliver Celestin tipped the third-down pass.

Eakin surprisingly led the most efficient offense leading the offense into field goal range. But Edwards decided to end practice without having one of his kickers attempt a field goal.

A lot of time in practice was spent on special teams. Ben Graham and Micah Knorr practiced punting from their own five-yard line and end zone to CB Justin Miller, RB Delvin Joyce, WR Justin McCareins, and WR Jonathan Carter. Miller had the only snafu of the four, dropping one of the punts. Graham punted the ball about 55 yards each time while Knorr’s punts were about 10 yards shorter. With a bunch of players falling during the session, Edwards yelled, “keep your feet men, stay off the ground.”

Field goals were also practiced as Mike Nugent was 8-9 on field goal attempts between 38-43 yards with his only miss a 43-yard attempt that went wide left with Knorr holding.

INSIDER TIDBITS

-While QB Chad Pennington did not participate in team drills this morning, he did throw to Coles, McCareins and WR Wayne Chrebet during individual drills with no pass longer than 15 yards. “To me, he looks like he’s throwing the ball harder. He’s looking good,” McCareins said of Pennington.

-WR Eddie Jackson who already is a long shot to make the team did not help his cause, dropping a pass during one-on-one red zone drills.

-S Derek Pagel had one of the biggest hits of practice, knocking Jackson to the turf after he caught a pass during the two-minute drill.

-The NFL Network will broadcast a live one hour segment from the Jets afternoon practice session today. The broadcast starts at 4PM and will be repeated at 8PM and 11PM.

INJURY REPORT

CB James Taylor is out indefinitely after injuring his knee yesterday. Edwards said that Taylor may need surgery. Edwards said the Jets have worked out a few players in the secondary, although he did not specify who they were, and may sign them by this afternoon. “We need legs. Guys are wounded,” Edwards said. Also adding to the secondary’s woes is CB Pete Hunter and CB Ray Mickens are both nursing sore knees. Hunter participated in this morning’s practice but was beat deep a couple of times while Mickens was held out. Edwards also said that LB Eric Barton bruised his knee in the off-season. “He’s fine,” Edwards said of Barton. “We don’t want him to aggravate it.” Edwards said the plan is to have Hunter, Mickens, and Barton only participate in practice when it’s on the team’s grass training field, which has been the afternoon the past few days. S Rashad Washington returned to practice after missing yesterday’s two practices with headaches.

-CB James Taylor (knee): Out
-CB Pete Hunter (knee): Day-to-Day
-CB Ray Mickens (knee): Day-to-Day

The Jets return to the field this afternoon for a shells practice at 3:30 p.m. QB Chad Pennington will throw for the fifth straight day. Check back to Jets Insider.com often for all the latest training camp news.
