Herman Edwards described CB Ray Mickens as “a real professional” after today’s afternoon practice. The coach did not comment on whether that meant he would cough up his No. 24 to Ty Law anytime in the near future.

Mickens and Law may be chatting soon, especially since Carl Poston, Law’s agent, is meeting with members of the Jets front office today. Jets officials did not confirm the report, but Edwards may know a bit more than the organization is letting on.

“My understanding is they’re meeting,” Edwards said. “Obviously it’s not [Law], so it must be his representation.”

Edwards followed up by saying he “is not involved. I don’t want to know. I just coach the football team.”

The rumors concerning Law started around the time of April’s draft and appear to be heating up now.

Asked if he knew a face-to-face meeting with Law’s agent and Jets assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum had been arranged, Edwards replied, “I understand that.”

“There people and our people are meeting and I don’t know where it’s at,” he continued. “I don’t know what time it is or whatever. I don’t really care. I don’t want to know.”

Edwards was clearly doing his routine media spin job, but a meeting is scheduled and announcement about Law could come soon. Law must first pass a physical, and since he may not be at 100 percent yet after a foot injury that required surgery last year, it’s not a given Law would make the team.

“Obviously if he arrives I think I’ll get a chance to talk to him,” Edwards said. “I don’t worry about stuff I don’t control,” Edwards said. “I control practice.”

Apparently Edwards didn’t do his job well enough this afternoon at Hofstra, he confessed. Edwards, usually jovial and upbeat, spoke with a sense of resignation after the day’s only practice, explaining how disappointed he was by his offense’s performance. Edwards cancelled today’s morning practice and did not expect such a lackluster performance.

“The defense early got the stick in their hand and they kept it,” he said. “The offense needs to get better. The defense played at a different speed and a different tempo than the offense day.

The fourth-year coach put the onus on himself, saying: “I didn’t do a good enough job of coaching today.”

A huge portion of the lackadaisical performance had to do with QB Chad Pennington sitting out of practice. Yesterday Edwards said the only circumstance which would hold out his $64-million quarterback is if Pennington’s surgically repaired right shoulder was sore. Today he deviated from that.

“He threw five days in a row and that’s a lot of throws in my estimation,” Edwards said. “I just wanted to give him a rest so he could come out tomorrow, give him a whole day, and see if he comes out tomorrow and is more lively.”

Still, Edwards’ concern was his offense’s blasé showing. Implementing the new system may have caught up with his unit today. During practice there seemed to be a lot of mixing and matching with personnel packages. At times different team units were meshed together and the whole operation looked clunky.

Edwards said he expects a better showing from his offense tomorrow, and who knows, maybe an appearance from Law in the near future.

“You guys know better than me,” Edwards told reporters.

Come on coach, we know better.

- DE Shaun Ellis and C Kevin Mawae and Pennington were given a day of rest today.

- New CBs Brandon Haw and Roosevelt Williams practiced with the second team defense.

- S Andre Maddox participated with the first team defense.

- DT Sione Pouha looked strong in individual line drills.
