One of the biggest stories over the past few weeks has not been on the field, but off of it. That story is of course the Jets speaking with FA CB Ty Law and today, Jets head coach Herman Edwards said the Jets have reached an agreement in principle with Law. One of the biggest stories over the past few weeks has not been on the field, but off of it. That story is of course the Jets speaking with FA CB Ty Law and today, Jets head coach Herman Edwards said the Jets have reached an agreement in principle with Law.

Law's contract details have not been disclosed but Jets Insider.com has learned that the deal is for $18MM over three years with a $5MM up front signing bonus.

“He’s taking a physical now, we’ll work him out in the afternoon and if everything goes well, he will be a Jet,” Edwards said after the morning practice.

Apparently everything went well as the Jets are set to introduce Law to the media at a 2 p.m. press conference today.

The talk of Law coming to the Jets began when CB Donnie Abraham started to consider retiring and heated up big time when he actually retired last month.

Many of the Jets players have lobbied for Law including RB Curtis Martin and defensive backs coach Corwin Brown, who both played with Law in New England.

Law is a four-time Pro Bowl selection who was released by the Patriots in February after breaking his left foot at Pittsburgh on October 31st and finished 2004 on the injured reserve list.

The 5’11, 200 pound Law had 36 interceptions in 141 career games with the Patriots.

Edwards talked about what Law brings to the Jets defense. “He has great instincts,” Edwards said. “He is physical corner...he uses his hands good. He has great hand-eye coordinator and studies receivers.”

Law is expected to be the starting left cornerback and Edwards likes the duo of Law and CB David Barrett. “We’re pretty good now,” Edwards said. “Both are big, physical guys.”

Edwards talked about what the Jets can do on defense with Law. “We can do things with a corner of his ability and put a lot on his plate,” Edwards said. “He frees things that we can do in our secondary and linebackers.”

While the Jets reaching an agreement with Law is no surprise, it was a bit shocking that the Jets released 10-year veteran Ray Mickens, who has spent his entire career with the Jets and missed last year with a torn ACL. “The problem I have is you add a guy, you have to let a guy go because of the salary cap,” Edwards said. “You cut a player not on ability but because of the money he makes…It’s always hard for a coach to deal with.”

Mickens was due to make $1.2 million this season. Edwards said there was no option of reworking Mickens contract. The Jets also released S Derek Pagel, RB Delvin Joyce, CB Roosevelt Williams, and G Dave Yovanovits.

INSIDER TIDBITS

-Offensive Coordinator Mike Heimerdinger brought out his bag of tricks this morning as QB Jay Fiedler threw a lateral screen pass to TE Doug Jolley who displayed a cannon, completing a 60-yard TD pass to WR Laverneus Coles, who beat S Oliver Celestin and S Erik Coleman on the play. “We got a bunch of them,” Edwards said of the trick plays. “They’re nice when they work.”

-Rookie S Kerry Rhodes had a near-interception on a QB Kevin Eakin pass but it went through his hands. After the play, defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson yelled at Rhodes, “Catch the ball.”

-K Mike Nugent was 4-4 on field goals from 43 yards with Ben Graham holding. K Xavier Bettia was 5-5 on field goals from 39 yards with Micah Knorr holding.

-Back-up RB Derrick Blaylock continues to impress, displaying nice footwork during his runs this morning.

-WR Justin McCareins caught a 12-yard touchdown pass in the back right corner of the end zone on a fade route from QB Jay Fiedler during 11-on-11 drills.

-DT Dewayne Robertson, QB Chad Pennington, and LB Victor Hobson were all given the morning practice off.

-FA rookie LB Mondoe Davis dropped a sure-interception on a ball that went through McCareins hands. After practice, Linebackers coach Bob Sutton spoke one-on-one to Davis.

INJURY REPORT

WR Jonathan Carter and WR Wayne Chrebet are both nursing sore hamstrings and did not practice this morning. Carter better get healthy quick as he has not been impressive during camp and WR Chas Gessner and WR Harry Williams, Jr. are threatening his roster spot. DE Shaun Ellis has an elbow injury and did not practice this morning.

-WR Jonathan Carter (hamstring): Day-to-Day
-WR Wayne Chrebet (hamstring): Day-to-Day
-DE Shaun Ellis (hamstring): Day-to-Day

The Jets will hold a 2 p.m. press conference this afternoon to announce the signing of Ty Law. The team takes the field at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon for a practice. Check back to Jets Insider.com for the latest training camp news as well as news on the Ty Law signing.
