Following a day dedicated to showcasing Ty Law to all fans and media, the Jets newest addition did his best disappearing act.

After coming onto the field for drills in today’s morning session at Hofstra he left the field rather discreetly on two separate occasions. When he reappeared he paced the sidelines, helmet in hand.

Don’t expect much more from Law in the near future. Head coach Herman Edwards has a plan for Law, one that includes him getting back into game shape. Law’s absence on the field had him in the Jets facility working out with strength and conditioning coach Markus Paul.

For now, Law will only participate in drills and will not take part in full-squad drills anytime soon. Edwards wants Law to observe practice and get an understanding of what the team wants him to do. It is not a matter of his foot hampering him, rather getting game-ready, said Edwards.

“It’s just a matter of where he’s at at this point,” he said. “Obviously he came off of surgery. He’s starting to get into shape. He’s working out.”

When Law does make it into practice he will be on the same regimen QB Chad Pennington is on, which is one practice a day. Law will be sit out of this Friday’s preseason opener.

“I don’t think he’s going to practice for at least a couple days,” defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson said. “[His return] will be whenever he can get himself into football condition.

“A lot of it is based on shape. Right now I don’t know what kind of shape he’s in physically. Once he gets into physical condition we’ll be OK.”

Henderson is looking forward to Law’s return to the field. The four-time Pro Bowler gives the defense a shutdown corner for the first time in recent history and it’s best corner since Aaron Glenn.

If he’s at 100 percent, Law’s presence can take away half the field. Matching up against a team’s best wide out is likely, but Henderson likes his options.

“It means I have flexibility now,” he said. “If Ty Law wants to say, ‘Donnie, give me their best guy,’ I’ll say Ty if you want it, you could take it. It gives us a true cover guy.”

Law could be pitted against a team’s best receiver in man-to-man coverage, allowing the Henderson to roll coverages to David Barrett’s side. Likewise, Law could oppose a team’s second receiver while the top dog gets double covered.

“I can do what I want now. Why waste your best guy on their best guy?” Henderson said.

Jonathan Vilma is realized the impact it will have on the entire defense, specifically freeing up the second-year linebacker to be able to prowl.

“For me I’m not going to have to worry about rolling any coverages or anything like that. Whatever Donnie has in store for us; we’ll probably play a little looser, [and] be more aggressive,” Vilma said.

Vilma won’t be free to roam as Law’s return is on hold, but when he does return, Law is looking forward to learning. Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

“I understand that coach Henderson is a very aggressive defensive coordinator,” Law said, “and that’s something I’m looking forward to adding to my expertise.”

INSIDER TIDBITS

Name game. If you’re headed to the Jets preseason opener against the Lions this Friday, you’d best bring your media guide. Coach Herm Edwards plans on playing most of the younger players to give them a chance to showcase what they can do. He will be holding out a laundry list of talent, too.

QB Chad Pennington will not play and it is unclear when he will make his preseason debut. Pennington had his left leg tapped during yesterday’s afternoon practice and this morning after getting taking a cleat to his calf, Edwards said. Backup Jay Fielder will get the start while third-stringer Brooks Bollinger will get the bulk of the work.

WRs Jonathan Carter and Wayne Chrebet, both nagged by hamstring injuries, will also sit out.

On the defensive side, CB Ty Law will not play Friday and his timetable for game action is uncertain. Rookie Justin Miller will start in Law's place. Eric Barton will be held out of practice all week with tendonitis in his right knee. Barton has been hampered most of training camp but Edwards denied Barton would need his knee scoped. LB Kenyatta Wright is still on the Physically Unable to Perform list with a foot sprain.

“No Comment.” After tempers flared at Albany in a joint practice against the Giants, several of their players have said that possible retaliation may happen when the two teams meet again in Aug. 26.

Defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson, who exchanged words with Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, grew short-tempered when being asked if his defense crossed the line.

“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” Henderson said, referring to the TV commercial while repeatedly refusing to field questions on the subject.

“I’m not going to get into that,” Coach Edwards said.

Jets fans may not want the Giants to be too physical, recalling the Jets and Giants preseason history. In the 1997 meeting then star CB Jason Sehorn tore his ACL, essentially ending his career as a an elite corner. In 2002, QB Chad Pennington broke his left wrist in the Jets final preseason game on a tackle by Giants LB Brandon Short.
