[Mark Cannizzaro] 7:57 pm: cannizzaro checking in. hello all.
[jetman67] 7:58 pm: Hey Mark
[Limolady] 7:58 pm: Hey Mark
[hofstra_justin] 7:59 pm: Good Evening! Welcome to the Jets Insider.com Chatroom and Welcome Jets Insider and NY Post Jets Writer Mark Cannizzaro. I will be moderating tonight since Sooth couldn't join us. Please IM me if you have a question and I'll let you know when it's your turn. Thanks for joining us Mark
[Mark Cannizzaro] 7:59 pm: Thank's for having me
[jetman67] 7:59 pm: Mark, Exactly what are the obstacles that are ahead, that could keep the Queens Stadium from becoming a reality?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:00 pm: fire it up
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:03 pm: Jetman, I have to be honest, I haven't been writing the stories on the stadium issues; Iíve concentrated more on the team and havenít been a part of those meetings. I will say this: I believe, the Jets are better off in Queens, as far away from the Giants as possible so they can forge their own identity, which has been a major problem forever. I, too, think they need to move their entire operation to wherever the new stadium is.
[Limolady] 8:03 pm: I'm very interested in the FA's, who you think will make the team or PS? Any inside 411 on Kracalik or McGill?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:03 pm: Iím sorry not to have given you anything more educational on that.
[pope] 8:04 pm: Mark, just wondering what sort of things you're seeing or hearing around Hofstra that us fans who can't be there might be surprised to hear. (regarding really any topic whatsoever with the football team)
[jetman67] 8:04 pm: thanks mark, we will all have to find out together
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:06 pm: Limolady, as for the FAs, McGill has probably shown himself more than Kracalik, who's buried on the depth chart behind A. Jones and Cavka. The prob. Kracalik faces is Bradway doesnít like to cut draft picks. McGill probably needs to make something happen against the Giants this week to stick around.
[Limolady] 8:06 pm: say goodbye to 6'9" OL then huh?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:07 pm: Pope, other than some mild surprise players, such as the emergence of Kerry Rhodes, for example, itís been a pretty nondescript camp. No major issues other than Abrahamís snit fit holdout and the law signing.
[pope] 8:08 pm: I hear you, thanks
[hofstra_justin] 8:09 pm: Speaking of Abraham, whats the latest
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:10 pm: There have been some reports saying he'll come in after this week's game and train for the final preseason game. I spoke to his agent today and he said he didnít know where that info was coming from, that the sides are no closer than they were a month ago. My take is that Abe will be back well before he has to lose money in fines. Thatís before the first regular season game.
[MarineJet] 8:12 pm: Does Reed have what it takes to play a whole season as NT and keep blockers off of Vilma?
[hofstra_justin] 8:12 pm: good question
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:14 pm: Good question marine. I have a hard time believing he's the starter. After all, they left him for the scrap heap after last season. But desperation makes for good bedfellows. He has looked active in camp and in the two games so far and remembers, he'll be rotating. It won't be Reed in there for 70 plays. The Jets would really like Pouha to develop to the point where he can be a factor, too.
[hofstra_justin] 8:15 pm: Was very surprised Donnie Henderson said Reed having great camp, really haven't noticed him stand out
[Limolady] 8:15 pm: What's the real story between you and Micah Knorr? There was some buzz on JI that he snubbed you at camp?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:15 pm: i need to see more of legree, because I havenít noticed much so far
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:17 pm: No, that's not true at all. I met him for the first time yesterday when I asked to interview him. He simply weirded out on me as soon as I brought Ben Graham's name up. He has been snubbing other reporters last week, which I thought was amusing, a punter blowing off reporters. I couldnít have been more cordial to him. He just got uptight when I brought up graham.
[jetman67] 8:17 pm: Itís been mentioned that Baker is ahead of Jolley on the depth chart. Is Baker out performing Jolley so far?
[WALLS OF JERRICHO_89] 8:18 pm: Mark, any truth to the rumor that Abraham will be switching to #56
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:18 pm: Jetman, Herm keeps saying Baker's having a great camp, but in the games they havenít gone to the TEs. Iím waiting to see he and or Jolley do something in a game.
[pope] 8:19 pm: Mark did Andre Maddox finally find his way back onto the practice field this week? Whoís going to take over the gunner position on specials now that McClover is out and is Houston's shoulder injury minor?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:20 pm: 89 Ė Bob Glauber wrote that in a short yesterday and i don't know if it's true or not. If Iím Abraham, Iíd want to stay as far away from anything that associated me with being a linebacker, because linebackers get paid less than DEs
[Limolady] 8:21 pm: Bob's an idiot
[WALLS OF JERRICHO_89] 8:22 pm: Speaking of Jerricho Cotchery, how involved will he be in the offense this year. From what I've seen he knows how to get open and run after the catch.
[MarineJet] 8:22 pm: I have heard Herm reply when asked about Abraham, that he intends to play him as soon as he shows up. Is this because of his outstanding pass rushing skills or is there another reason, like maybe teaching him a lesson about missing training camp, because he is an injury liability and if he gets injured early, this will probably hurt his chances for the long term contract he wants.
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:22 pm: Pope, they like Maddox and want to see more of him. I saw Houston hurt the shoulder and it didnít look that violent, so I don't think itís anything long-term. As for gunner, Iím going to watch for that fri night, because i don't know what Westhoff has in mind for the season right now.
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:25 pm: marine, herm plans to play Abe because he thinks he can help him win a game, he doesnít care about teaching lessons. I will say this though, the longer Abe stays out the more it looks like he's going to be a part time player this year. Bryan Thomas stops the run a million times better and Abe is not going to be in shape. Now then, how do you give a part time pass rusher $18 million guaranteed? Abe has set himself up for failure this year. Hopefully, he'll have a good year and get his $$$, but he's making it very hard on himself.
[Limolady] 8:25 pm: How strong do you think the O line will be with newcomers Jones and how far along do you think Marko Cavka is in terms of being a capable swing/relief guy? Do you think TB may be cruising the wires for a late cut veteran OL as insurance?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:27 pm: Limo, I am a fan of the work the Doug Marrone has done with this line and i think Jones will be as more than adequate fill for Kareem, who has an off year anyway last year. They hope Cavka can be as good swing guy, because there isnít a lot of experienced depth there outside of Ethan brooks. I'm sure TB is taking a hard look at the wires. Donít expect a Pete Kendall to come falling through the sky again, though.
[WALLS OF JERRICHO_89] 8:29 pm: Speaking of Jerricho Cotchery, how involved will he be in the offense this year. From what I've seen he knows how to get open and run after the catch. In addition, if the 5th WR on the roster or is he one someone else's squad already?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:29 pm: Jericho, as far as Cotchery goes, I believe they have to get him more involved. The question is going to be how they divide the time with he and Chrebet, who I still think will be a factor this year. But Cotchery does nothing but catch the ball and make plays when they go to him. ... As for fifth WR, herm said he hopes it comes from this crop, because they know the system. Harry Williams won't be ready in time,. Gessner is being given every opp, but he has to do something in the games,
[pope] 8:31 pm: Cotchery should be the #3 WR, hopefully Herms doesn't play the sentimental card with Wayne and gives Cotch his due.
[jetman67] 8:31 pm: Mark, with the passing of Thomas Herrion there has been a lot of talk of protecting players health. It seems that linemen keep getting bigger. Do you think that a full cardio exam should be added to the pre camp physical?
[WALLS OF JERRICHO_89] 8:31 pm: couldn't agree with you more pope.
[hofstra_justin] 8:32 pm: good q jetman
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:32 pm: pope, I kind of agree, though something tells me Chrebet in Dingerís system will return to his third-down prowess again. I like Cotchery, though, he's a bigger-play threat than Chrebet.
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:33 pm: jetman, i don't know this for sure, but I would think a full cardio exam should already be in place. But it's a good question you raise.
[pope] 8:33 pm: I loved Cotchery at NC State, he's bigger, faster and stronger than Wayne at this point. I still like Wayne but Cotch is the better player at this point IMO.
[Limolady] 8:34 pm: Do you think that David Barrett and Ty Law as being consistent through the season? Will they have the shut down corner back capabilities we all hope they will and do you see any of the other CB's that can fill the gap?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:34 pm: I think the more he's used the more he'll flourish
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:36 pm: limo, I need to see Ty law play in games before I think any of us will know if he's still the shutdown corner he was. As for Barrett, I would think a lot of teams will throw on him with law on there other side, so watch out for more INTs for him. No other CBs will challenge those two guys. theyíre still l trying to settle on nickel and dime guys right now.
[pope] 8:36 pm: Mark, the Jets signed a LB waived by Jax today, camp fodder? special teamer? anything?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:37 pm: pope, I know nothing about him yet (I was actually off today), but Iím sure he's a guy that was on Westhoff's special teams short list. They could use some depth there, too.
[hofstra_justin] 8:38 pm: Mark, do you think Justin miller was given too much this preseason-punt, kick returns and learning a new defense
[pope] 8:38 pm: they seem a bit thin at LB right now
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:39 pm: I know herm said today miller has hit the wall. Iíd like to see him force fed some more return duties in game situations. Let him learn on the job there. Was disappointed not to see him returning punts lastweek.
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:39 pm: They are thin at LB, particularly with the loss of McClover, who was quietly a valuable guy on specials and as a backup.
[Limolady] 8:40 pm: Donnie Henderson is a tough coach, do you think it's his demeanor with the players or does his tenacity push players to either step or crack under the pressure?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:42 pm: I sat down with Jonathan Vilma last night and one of the things we talked about was Henderson. He said all Henderson asks of his players is to run and hit and play hard on every play. His demeanor is part of his makeup. It works for some players and some get intimidated. Thatís where a veteran can step in and be a buffer.
[jetman67] 8:42 pm: Mark, Its obvious that Knorr is more polished than Graham. but Graham has proven that he can produce turnovers with his spiraling kicks. Do yu think Graham gets the job?
[pope] 8:43 pm: Hendu is da man
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:44 pm: My gut feeling is they want Graham to win the job, because he can turn into a special talent at that position, which has been a black hole for them in the herm era. I think Friday night vs. giants is huge for him. If he has a good game, I think he has the job. Knorr, who's performed perfectly well this summer, simply looks too much like an ordinary punter to me. I think they should take the chance on graham for his upside.
[Buldawg] 8:44 pm: Mark- Do you expect any fireworks with the Giants on Friday? [Mark Cannizzaro] 8:45 pm: Dawg, I do think there will be some contentious moments. maybe nothing dirty, but there will be players who have to be separated at some point in the night regardless of how much the teams have been downplaying it. i don't expect anything stupid to happen, though.
[WALLS OF JERRICHO_89] 8:45 pm: Mark, speaking of the DT situation, what happened to Tim McGill? He looked very impressive against the Lions and I don't remember seeing him against the Vikings. I'd like to see him go up against some first stringers to get a real understanding of his ability.
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:46 pm: This is a problem the free agent long shots like him face. The starters are going to play into the third quarter. I still don't know what to think about McGill yet.
[Limolady] 8:47 pm: Is it true that Jonathan Carter was a "marked man" when the OC Heimerdinger first met him and they had words during a team meeting? Do you think it was a mistake to let him go and was the hamstring thing just a way of getting out gracefully?
[pope] 8:48 pm: good q limo
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:49 pm: I am not aware of any shouting match between Carter and Dinger. I simply think the Jets saw enough of the guy. He had his chances. You can live on potential only so long before the lease runs out. Besides, Carter would have had to make more money than, say a Gessner, who'll make the rookie min. is he wins the job. So money is a factor, too.
[WALLS OF JERRICHO_89] 8:49 pm: With Houston being out for Friday, how many carries do you think Curtis will get. I saw a stat on CBS during the Vikes game that when Curtis carries more than 20 times in the preseason, he goes on to have a very productive year. So far, Curtis has 8 carries. I don't see the starters playing much against the Eagles.
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:51 pm: I see Curtis getting about 10 touches Friday. Youíre right, he hasnít had as many as they'd like him to have to date, but they havenít run the ball much. I think he'll get 10 Friday and four or five next week for a total about 22 or 23 for the preseason
[pope] 8:51 pm: How much of Dinger's offense will be implemented come game 1, considering Chad's time away?
[Limolady] 8:52 pm: Any concerns about this Friday night's with the Gints and them wanting to extract revenge for the Albany scrimmage? We all remember what happened to Chad the last time? How long do you think they'll leave the starters in?
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:52 pm: I think a lot of it will be at the ready. Chadís been schooling up on it. Obviously, they're not showing anything in preseason games.
[pope] 8:52 pm: cool thanks
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:53 pm: The starters will play into the third quarter. I don't think there will be anything dirty or intent to hurt anyone. Itíll be a little more physical and intense than a regular preseason game. Thatís all.
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:54 pm: Herm is a proponent of not playing scared. You can't do that. You stick to your routine and prepare for the season
[FlaJet023] 8:54 pm: Mark, Just joined the chat sorry if this has been asked already....Last year we got extremely lucky bringing in Kendall late last year...do you think someone will be brought in....maybe a veteran DT or OT???
[Limolady] 8:54 pm: Your lips to God's ears mark
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:55 pm: Fla. I don't think they'll be that lucky to find a guy like Kendall, but they're searching the wires. Probably the bottom five players on the final 53 will be tinkered with. I don't anticipate anyone of significance coming in
[WALLS OF JERRICHO_89] 8:56 pm: Thanks for the time Mark.
[Limolady] 8:56 pm: Lets Go Jets!
[Mark Cannizzaro] 8:56 pm: Thanks guys. Take care. Talk to you again ...
[hofstra_justin] 8:56 pm: thanks for participating everyone and thanks mark for taking the time out to join us
[jetman67] 8:56 pm: Thanks Mark
[jetman67] 8:56 pm: Job well done Justin, thanks
[hofstra_justin] 8:57 pm: thanks jetman
[Limolady] 8:57 pm: Great chat Mark thanks for stopping by and we'll see you next week!
