Jets head coach Herman Edwards knew his team would have to score a lot of points if they wanted to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on opening day. But Edwards never imagined his offense would only produce seven points en route to a 27-7 loss to Kansas City.

The Jets showed they have a lot of work to do as they struggled throughout the game. QB Chad Pennington finished the day 21-of-34 for 264 yards and an interception. Pennington and the offense fumbled seven times, losing two of them.

If there was a bright spot, it had to be TE Chris Baker, who had seven catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.

The Chiefs received the ball to begin the game and established the running game early. On 2nd-and-5 from their own 30, RB Priest Holmes ran for 35 yards up the middle. On the next play, RB Larry Johnson rushed around the left end 35 yards for a score and after K Lawrence Tynes extra point, the Chiefs were up 7-0 just 1:21 into the opener.

Kansas City began their next drive at their own 5 after a Jets punt. QB Trent Green drove the team down the field and the 12-play, 95 yard-drive was capped off by a Holmes three-yard touchdown run as he freed himself from the Jets defenders and the Chiefs led 14-0.

Rookie CB Justin Miller ran the ensuing kickoff back for 50 yards to give the Jets good field position at the Chiefs 42. On 3rd-and-9 from the Chiefs 10, Pennington fumbled and the Chiefs recovered.

The Chiefs were able to get three points off the turnover as Tynes kicked a 41-yard field goal, giving the Chiefs a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The Jets used a steady dose of RB Curtis Martin on the next drive to get into Chiefs territory but on 2nd-and-5 from the Chiefs 39, Pennington’s pass was intercepted by Patrick Surtain who returned it 53 yards to the Jets 22.

CB Ty Law made his first contribution as a Jet, intercepting Green’s pass intended for WR Sammie Parker in the end zone.

The Jets were unable to do anything with the ball and went into the locker room at halftime trailing 17-0.

Rookie K Mike Nugent slipped attempting a 28-yard field goal on the Jets first possession of the second half.

Pennington’s troubles continued midway through the third quarter, fumbling the ball on 3rd-and-8 and the Chiefs recovered.

Again, the Chiefs converted off the turnover as Tynes nailed a 38-yard field goal, extending the lead to 20-0.

After the Chiefs stopped the Jets on a 4th-and-10, Johnson carried five times for 54 yards including a four-yard touchdown run that gave his team a 27-0 lead at the end of the third quarter. Johnson carried nine times for 110 yards on the afternoon.

The Jets were forced to go for it on 4th-and-goal from the Chiefs 2 but Pennington’s pass intended for WR Justin McCareins fell incomplete.

QB Jay Fiedler relieved Pennington late in the game and finally got the team on the board, hooking up with TE Chris Baker for a 23-yard score with under a minute left in the game. But by then, it was too late.

-QB Brooks Bollinger (3rd QB), RB Cedric Houston, LB Ryan Myers, OL Steve Morley, TE-LS Joel Dressen, and WR Dante Ridgeway were inactive.

-Rookie S Kerry Rhodes led the Jets with 10 tackles.

-The Jets had an uncharacteristic eight penalties for 80 yards.
