Love him or hate him, Vinny Testaverde is again a NY Jet.
With the Jets in quarterback hell from the loss of their top two signal callers, the native son from Long Island is making a second stint in Hempstead. The signing was officially announced at a press conference today.
Testaverde, who will be 42 in November, will help fill the depleted Jets QB corps that were shattered when both Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler injured their shoulders against Jacksonville this past Sunday. Pennington is out for the year with a torn rotator cuff and Fielder will also be lost for several weeks or possibly the entire year as well. Both QB's are in Alabama today visiting with renowned orthapedist James Andrews for a second opinion. Pennington will be put on injured reserve and Fiedler may follow.
After considering journeymen QB's Doug Johnson, Jonathan Quinn and Jesse Palmer, Head Coach Herm Edwards felt that Testaverde was his best option.
"Vinny's a guy who has been here," said the Coach. "He's a good fit for us as far as he is in his comfort zone here, he knows me, we had a great relationship. He can throw the ball. He can get up at 3 in the morning and still throw an out (pattern) as well as anybody."
Testaverde addressed the media shortly after the Coach's press conference and was visibly excited to be back in the NFL and with the Jets.
"It's good to be back playing for the Jets again," said Testaverde. "After I left here last year, I always thought it would be a one ≠day contract and retire a New York Jet. But, it's really good to be back. I'm excited, I'm happy, I'm nervous, I'm anxious, all of those feelings of coming back and playing for the New York Jets again."
Despite not participating in an NFL camp this Summer, Testaverde came to Hofstra today in excellent shape. The 17 year veteran is confident he can guide this team.
"If I didn't have high expectations I wouldn't have come back here," said Testaverde. "Watching this team this year, I think the defense is playing outstanding. I think right now that the offense needs a little shot of adrenaline after losing two QB's but I think that if we can just have a little success, this team will go a long way and reach the expectations that everyone has set out for itself."
Brooks Bollinger, the Jets third string QB will start this week and will likely continue to start until Testaverde learns the offense. If Bollinger plays badly, the timetable may be accelerated.
The team will also sign a third QB before the end of the day which will be announced shortly.
