Bills 27 - Jets 17
October 16th, 2005
The honeymoon is over. Vinny Testaverde’s feel good comeback story ended today as the surly veteran looked like a rusty 41 year old as the Jets fell to the Bills 27 -17.

Bills QB Kelly Holcomb, who made his second start in place of second year man JP Losman threw two TD’s while RB Willis McGahee ran for 143 yards against the Jets defense.

The Bills’ defense bended against the Jets running game by allowing Jets RB Curtis Martin to run 148 yards, but didn’t break by sacking Testaverde five time and forcing three Jets turnovers.

Martin’s rushing total was his first 100+ yard game of 2005 after winning the league rushing title last year.

Testaverde looked rusty in his second start after taking over for Brooks Bollinger last week. He completed only 12 of his 26 pass attempts and was intercepted twice. His second interception changed the momentum of the game with Buffalo leading 17- 10 in the third quarter. As the Jets were threatening at the Bills’ 20, Testaverde misread the coverage and LB Angelo Crowell intercepted Testaverde on the Bills’ 18. Buffalo then went on to an 82 yard scoring drive which put them ahead for good.

The Jets defense was just not on this afternoon by allowing 341 total yards by the Bills, missing several key tackles and only sacking Holcomb once. One bright spot was a Holcomb interception in the second half by Jets LB Mark Brown that was returned to the Bills’ 2 which led to a Jets score.

The Jets missed a big opportunity with both other division opponents (Miami and New England) losing on Sunday. The Buffalo win puts the Bills in a tie for first place with New England..

"Im disappointed in the whole team," said Head Coach Herman Edwards following the loss.

INJURY REPORT

Jets C Kevin Mawae injured his elbow and was replaced by both Pete Kendall and Jonathan Goodwin. He will get an MRI tomorrow. CB Ty Law reportedly injured his groin and S Oliver Celestin has a sore knee. More information on these injuries will come tomorrow.

The Jets try to regroup this week for a Monday Night matchup next week against the Falcons in Atlanta. Be sure to check back to Jets Insider.com for all the latest NY Jets news.
