For any quarterback in the NFL, if they will succeed they need the confidence and trust of their teammates. It did not appear QB Brooks Bollinger had the trust or confidence of his teammates and coaches in the Jets 13-3 loss at Baltimore on Oct. 2.
Bollinger was replaced by Vinny Testaverde the next game but has seen action the last two games replacing the injured Testaverde.
Head coach Herman Edwards talked about what he’s seen from Bollinger since the loss to Baltimore. “I think since then he’s gotten better,” Edwards said. “And the guys around him have played better; too, not just the quarterback, the guys around have played better. The offensive line I thought played better last week than they did the previous week, and that was good. If we can keep building on that, we’ve got a shot.”
The 2-6 Jets are hoping Bollinger can provide a spark to an offense that ranks 30th in total offense (246 yards per game) and 28th in points per game (14.8). “I’m going to try and give as much of a boost as I can,” Bollinger said. “I’m just going to try and have a little flare and try to not let the bad plays affect the rest of my game. I’ll just keep going forward.”
Bollinger talked about having the confidence of his teammates. “I think that’s important for every position,” Bollinger said. “This is such a team game. I think this is probably more of a team sport than any other. You need everybody doing what they’re supposed to be doing and guys have to really trust that the guy next to them is going to do their job. That’s everything to me and the only way to get that is to go out and do that, help these guys get confidence in me.”
“Well, I think he’s gained more confidence now because he’s been in that role a couple of times, and when he’s played a lot more when they just go start,” Edwards said.
-The Next Antonio Gates? The Jets yesterday signed to their practice squad TE Corey Lamkin who last played organized football in the 8th grade. Lamkin did however play basketball at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and at 6'6"-240 Lbs is an athletic specimen. Lamkin is also very quick as he was clocked 4.07 in the 40. "He's a project," said the Coach on Lamkin. "He's really raw but has a lot of athletic ability."
-Even though WR Harry Williams Jr. was signed to the active roster yesterday, don't expect to see him on the field anytime soon. The Coach reported that Williams is still not fully recovered from a knee injury he suffered in training camp. Although he is able to run straight, he cannot cut on routes yet.
-Several sources are confirming that WR Wayne Chrebet, who suffered his ninth concussion on Sunday and was placed on injured reserve, will announce his retirement following the season. The 32 year old 11 year vet has nothing to prove at this point and it's unlikely he will risk any permanent damage by continuing to play.
-With Chrebet done and a wideout spot open, is it possible that the Jets may consider ostracized wideout Terrell Owens next year? The Star Ledger reported today that the team may have an interest. However, don't believe the hype. Even though Herm Edwards is known as a Coach that can handle problem players, Owens is a train wreck and it's hard to believe that despite Owens' phenomenal talent, Edwards would bring such a cancer into his locker-room
