Fiedler Done For Year

When Jay Fielder signed with the Jets in March of 2005, the move was highly praised by Jets fans and the media. Fiedler appeared to be a great insurance policy to back up Chad Pennington at quarterback. It also marked a homecoming for Fiedler who is from Oceanside on Long Island.

But Fiedler injured his shoulder in week three against Jacksonville and today, head coach Herman Edwards announced that Fiedler will have season-ending shoulder surgery. Pennington also injured his shoulder against Jacksonville and was placed on injured reserve last month. Fiedler had thrown in practice over the past few weeks but Edwards said Fiedlerís shoulder is not responding the way the Jets were hoping.

ďEven last week, he was saying he couldnít put any zip on it,Ē Edwards said. ďHe could throw for 10 or 15 yards, but he never felt like he had the zip to pop it, to throw it with the tight spin on it.Ē

The 33-year-old Fiedler was 8-13 for 107 yards and a touchdown this year.

Edwards would not comment on Fiedlerís future with the team. Fiedler is signed through 2009. ďI donít want to get into next year already,Ē Edwards said. ďI think itís slighting the football team and itís not even worth discussing because weíre not there as an organization on exactly what weíre going to do. And I donít think itís fair to the team for me to be commenting on that now. We have four games left. That is more important at this point.Ē

The season has been a quarterback carousel with five different quarterbacks playing for the Jets. Brooks Bollinger will make his fifth straight start Sunday when the Jets host Oakland.

With Fiedler now out of the picture, donít be surprised if Vinny Testaverde takes the field at least once more this season. Edwards said he wants to get the 42-year-old Testaverde some more action before the season ends.

ďI would love to get back on the field but again itís not my call and whatever Herm decides is ok with me. Like I said earlier in the year, this has been a bonus for me and even though Iím not playing right now, Iím just enjoying every day of it.Ē
