Jets Insider.com has learned that New England Patriots Defensive Coordinator Eric Mangini has accepted the Jets offer to become their next Head Coach. Details of the multi-year contract is not yet yet available but sources say that the deal is for at least 4 years in excess of $2 million per year.
Mangini, just shy of 35 years old, becomes the youngest head coach in the NFL behind newly hired Green Bay Coach Mike McCarthy, who is 42.
Despite interviewing eight candidates, including former Vikings Head Coach Mike Tice today, Mangini, a Bill Bellichick protoge' who has spent almost all of his career under the legendary Pats coach, was the Jets' first choice from the beginning to replace Herman Edwards who left for Kansas City 10 days ago.
The team is expected to make an official announcement at a press conference on Tuesday and there is not yet any word if Mangini will retain any of Edwards' assistant coaches, all who still are under contract.
