Jets head writer Mark Cannizzaro is reporting today that new Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini will promote current LB’s coach Bob Sutton to defensive coordinator. Sutton will be replacing Donnie Henderson who the Jets officially announced today will not be retained.

On the offensive side of the ball, several sources are reporting late today that Mangini has decided to keep Mike Heimerdinger as the Jets offensive coordinator.

No official announcement on Sutton or Heimerdinger has been made but it's expected that the Jets will confirm on Friday.

Sutton has been with the team since 2000 and was originally hired by Bill Parcells for Al Groh’s staff. Prior to the Jets, Sutton was the head coach at Army.

The promotion of Sutton ends the tenure of defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson who was officially let go by the Jets today in a late afternoon press release.

Henderson reportedly interviewed yesterday for the defensive coordinator position open in Green Bay. There’s also a chance Henderson may join Herman Edwards in Kansas City as a positional coach if no coordinator jobs are available.

After meeting with all defensive assistants yesterday, Mangini interviewed offensive assistants today.

The news that Heimerdinger is staying aboard is a bit of a surprise to some after news broke earlier that there was bad blood and hard feelings after Heimerdinger was not chosen to succeed Herm Edwards as the Jets head coach. Reports have surfaced that Mangini had a good meeting with Heimerdinger today and told him that he was expected to be back to honor his contract which still has two years remaining on it. There had been buzz prior to today that Heimerdinger would be heading to Denver to take over for Gary Kubiak who is likely heading to Houston to be their head coach after the Broncos' season is over.

Although Dinger is staying, some are not. Besides Henderson, the team also announced via press release that wide receivers coach Pep Hamilton and tight ends coach John Zernhelt would not be retained. Mangini met with special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff on Wednesday but there has been no decision as to whether he will stay or not. As of now, the only other locks to stay aboard are defensive backs coach Corwin Brown and strength coach Markus Paul. Defensive line coach Denny Marcin was also reportedly asked to stay aboard.
