With no surprsise to anyone, the Jets officially designated DE John Abraham as their franchise player for the second straight year.
Abraham is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 1st and with this move, it gives the Jets the right to match any offer made to Abraham or get compensation of 2 first round draft choices from the team that signs him if they choose not to match the offer.
If Abraham accepts his franchise tender from the Jets he will be paid the average of the top five paid defensive ends in the league which is a bit under $7MM. More likely, he will either be traded or signed to a long term deal.
“The franchise tag is one of the resources we have to protect ourselves in a competitive league,” said Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum in a press release to the media today. “By franchising John, it speaks volumes about what type of player we feel he is and we stand behind our decision, with the full realization that at this point in time it is in the best interest of the club from both a financial and competitive standpoint.”
