Jets has learned through a reliable source that former Jets center Kevin Mawae could be close to signing with another team in the AFC East (and no, itís not the Dolphins).

The source told Jets Insider that the New England Patriots are interested in signing the 35 year old six-time Pro-Bowler, to shore up an offensive line that was very inconsistent last year. Patriots center Dan Koppen, who is a three year player from Boston College had been the starter for New England but injured his shoulder last September and was lost for the rest of the season. Heís expected back, but with the possibility of losing starting G Stephen Neal who is an unrestricted free agent, the Pats may move Koppen to guard and add Mawae at center. An offer from New England could come shortly.

Other teams that have showed interest in Mawae are Miami, New Orleans, Buffalo and Philadelphia but none are reportedly as close to making an offer as New England. The Pats also could be interested in former Jets T Jason Fabini to add depth to their line. Patriots starting T Matt Light is also coming off a stint on the injured reserve list.

Mawae, was released by the Jets last Sunday in an obvious move by new Head Coach Eric Mangini, to get younger and bigger on the offensive line.
