Sweating It Out: In another sweltering session, the Jets returned to the field this morning and got no breaks from Coach Mangini as he worked the team for another two hour-plus practice.

ALSO: A starting CB is injured and more details on the Monsanto Pope departure.

With the temperature exceeding 90 degrees today during the morning practice, you could see that the heat was definitely getting a hold of the players early. Head coach Eric Mangini wants his players to be “fast” and it took awhile for his players to respond to that statement. Surprisingly though, Mangini wasn’t the first coach to yell at his players to hurry up. Offensive line coach Tony Wise, who was quick to mutter the theme of camp to every member of the line to get it together and quicken their pace, took that job. The practice again was held longer than usual, but something new appeared at practice today.

For the first time this year at camp, all the players were having fun and expressing their emotions near the end of practice as the team conducted goal line drills. Mangini said it was, “good to see emotion” from his players and then even joked around saying that, “everybody’s having a lot fun here.” Besides joking around for the first time, Mangini also said something surprising during his press conference. If the heat and the temperature get worse tomorrow as it has been warned by the National Weather Service, the team might change their practice schedule from 2 o’clock if the medical and coaching staff feels it necessary for the players to avoid the scorching temperatures, which feel like 110 degrees at times tomorrow.

Mangini tried to monitor the player’s health today by allowing more breaks in between drills and also monitoring the players’ hydration. “We gave them water in between drills and we have weigh-ins before and after practice to check on the players’ hydration,” said Mangini in regards to how the players were being treated for the excessive heat. The practice itself was today focused around goal line situations and more work between the offense and defense against each other in 11-on-11 drills.

Brooks Bollinger worked with the first team today and like all the quarterbacks during practice, he had some good points and bad points. Mangini still hasn’t given any final decision on to who his starting quarterback will be, but he did complement Chad Pennington on “stringing together three to four good practices,” but was then quick to mention all the mistakes his quarterbacks made throughout practice including Pennington, thereby not showing himself to lean towards any player that might be proving themselves to be the number one starter.

The practice was also different today because besides the warm-ups drills, the team mostly practiced on the grass today instead of the artificial turf partly due to the weather. CB Ray Mickens commented on the heat by saying, “in Texas the breeze is hot and here, at least the breeze is cool.” Mickens also mentioned how the team was younger know than when he first was with the team, but that, “there’s change in the NFL from year-to-year and team-to-team. Every job is open and you play as hard as you can and you do that to put the best team out there.”

CB/KR Justin Miller stated that, “we all know what’s expected from us every time we go out there and we know to give 110 percent.” With the new emotions released today in practice, Miller noted that with “practice every day you try to have fun.” Miller said the main focus of the team though was to “compete and help each other everyday to get better.”

TE Chris Baker continued the new fun-loving Jets regime by joking around about the addition of WR Chris Baker, “I guess they’ll need to put my first initial of middle initial on one of our jerseys for the preseason games.”

Pennington is still saying that he is having fun being involved in the quarterback competition and he feels he is making progress every day but still has a long way to go. Pennington also mentioned the fact that he liked having more experience as a starter then the other three calling it a “new experience since usually I’m the person who has lacked the experience.” Pennington stated that it was new for him having such a level playing field with each quarterback being revolved around working with the first team.

The Jets continue practice tonight at 5:30 and Mangini said the team would be practicing goal line drills and two-minute situations with the defense.

- After quitting the team yesterday, DT Monsanto Pope announced he's retiring from the NFL. Pope was signed as a free agent from the Broncos this off-season. The loss leaves a void in the depth of the Jets' defensive line.

- CB Eric Coleman, who has missed the last couple of practices with an illness is said to be feeling much better today.

- CB David Barrett has a leg injury and is listed as day-to-day.

- Coach Mangini said during his press conference that players on the P-U-P, (physically unable to perform) list are allowed to come outside and work-out on the sidelines, but Curtis Martin is better being left inside to rehab from his injury.

-TE Jason Pociask (shoulder): day to day
-CB Eric Coleman (illness): day to day
-DT Sione Pouha (leg): day to day
-CB David Barrett (leg): day to day
-RB Curtis Martin (knee) on PUP list
-C Trey Teague (ankle) on PUP list

The Jets return to the field later today for a 5:30 PM pracitce. Be sure to check back to JI for all the latest camp reports.
