The absurd temperatures that have been driving the east coast crazy the last couple of days started to disappear Thursday night, just in time for the Jets to start their night practice after a grueling daytime practice. A brief drizzle accompanied by a delay in the start of the practice set the mood for an easy night for the Jets players. Their practice was, for a change, only two hours starting at around six, half-an-hour later than the scheduled time. Practice was held on their regular fields inside the Weeb Ewbank Hall complex away from the public.

The four players that everyone has been talking about since the start of camp, the quarterbacks, started the practice by standing in the middle of the field and throwing to receivers who were running down field. The quarterbacks then left the field as the special teams came in to practice punting and kickoffs. P Ben Graham had a great practice kicking the ball in the range of 50 to 60 yards, while WR/KRs Tim Dwight and Jerricho Cotchery practiced catching the punts. The team also practiced fake punts with quarterback turned wide receiver Brad Smith taking the snap and handing it off to Graham for the run.

The music, which has been a new feature to Jets players under the Eric Mangini regime, was blasting before practice began and then stopped for almost an hour until the team started practicing game-type situations.

QB Chad Pennington started at quarterback for the drills as the team practiced moving the ball from their own one-yard line. Pennington though did not throw many balls during the practice most likely from the fact that he was near his “pitch count” from the trainers. He did however look great when he did throw going seven for seven at one point, while the man who seems to be his fiercest competition, Patrick Ramsey went seven for twelve, but was throwing the deep ball which has been missing from Pennington’s game since he has been back with the team on the field. Despite his stron arm, Ramsey still at times looks a bit confused as he was sacked twice and took a few delay of game penalties.

Pennington had a great throw to WR Reggie Newhouse that would have resulted in a touchdown except that Newhouse bobbled the ball and it was then slapped away. Newhouse is trying to prove himself to coach Mangini especially after Mangini came out in support of Newhouse earlier in the day, “he made a couple of difficult catches where you open your eyes and say, ‘Okay, we need to spend a little more time looking at this.’” The trick is now for Newhouse is to stay calm and cool under the pressure.

In limted action, Rookie QB Kellen Clemens was a perfect 4-4.

The team also tried field goals with K Mike Nugent who was way short on a 56 yarder that landed halfway in the end zone. Nugent would make up for his miss later on in practice. The team went into an overtime drill with Ramsey leading the team down to the opponent’s 36-yard line, thanks in part to a long pass from Ramsey to WR Justin McCareins. Nugent then came in and delivered a game winning and practice ending 51-yard field goal that had plenty of room to spare as it was right down the middle.

As we reported this morning, Mangini made it official that tomorrow's practice is cancelled which undoubtedly is a huge relief to all the players and staff after a brutal seven days. The next time the Jets will be practicing is on Saturday at 2:30 at the Meadowlands. Mangini has said that this, “is important with as many new players, new coaches, and new support staff to get familiar with the environment we’re going to play in.”

- No new injuries to report from camp during the evening practice.

- As mentioned above, practice scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow has been canceled by coach Mangini.

- The team wore different colored jerseys during the night practice, with the offense wearing the green jerseys and the defense sporting the white jerseys, a change from the other practices where they wore vice-versa.
