It is only mid-August, but the Jets have already had a play called back. The penalty was on number 44, running back Lee Suggs, and the infraction was failure to pass the team physical on Tuesday morning. Suggs failure to meet the team’s requirements for being deemed physically ready to play has made the recent trade of cornerback Derrick Strait for Suggs void.
Jets head coach Eric Mangini announced Tuesday morning that Suggs will now return to the Cleveland Browns and Strait will rejoin the Jets camp at Hofstra. Though Mangini would not openly confess his disappointment, his words seemed to express a sense that the team had lost a chance to fill a major hole.
“I feel that there was a great opportunity for both teams and both players involved in the trade,” Mangini said. “We made the move as an effort to improve the competition at the running back spot but now Derrick has a chance to come back here and continue to work in the secondary.”
Mangini did not say what other options the team is currently pursuing, but one has to believe the team will continue to look to upgrade at the position. Possible trade options could be the Titans’ Chris Brown or the Bears’ Thomas Jones. Mangini would not go further into detail about the Jets plan other than to say that he and GM Mike Tannenbaum evaluate the organization, the team, and the options available outside the team on a daily basis.
