The Jets hope their second attempt to trade for a RB is a susscessful one with the aquisition of 49ers Kevan Barlow.
The announcement was made by Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. “We have been impressed with Kevan’s production in both the running and passing game,” said Tannenbaum. “We feel Kevan will complement our running back group, and he will come in and compete for playing time.”

49’ers head coach Mike Nolan said that, “this is a great opportunity for Kevan because of New York’s need at running back. Kevan has been committed to our program and done well. With the depth at running back we felt we could make this move.”

Barlow was originally drafted out of the University of Pittsburgh with the 49’ers third round pick in 2001. Then 49’ers general manager Terry Donahue drafted Barlow with the intent of him becoming the starter after RB Garrison Hearst retired.

Following the 2002 season, the 49’ers as a whole fell apart. First, came the firing of head coach Steve Mariucci and then after the 2003 season ownership decided to start rebuilding the team for the future. QB Jeff Garcia was cut along with Hearst and WR Terrell Owens was traded to Philadelphia in a three-team deal that also involved the Baltimore Ravens.

After this, Barlow became the starter in San Francisco and has held the job up to this point. Now in his sixth NFL season, Barlow, 6-1, 234, has played in 72 career games, with 30 starts, and has gained 3,614 yards on 891 carries. He has a 4.1 career rushing average and has scored 24 touchdowns.

In 2005 he rushed for 581 yards on 176 carries. He totaled a season-high 101 yards on 26 carries vs. Tampa Bay (10-30) to mark his fifth career 100-yard game. Barlow recorded his first 1,000-yard rushing season in 2003 with a career-high 1,024 yards and captured a career-high seven touchdowns the following season.

It remains to be seen now if Barlow, once actually a member of the Jets, will become the starter, and if not, who will he be competing against for the starting job and if one of the running backs will be the fourth all-time leading rusher Curtis Martin.
