The 2006 NY Jets practiced today for the first time following a win. The team is coming off a 27-14 victry over the Washington Redskins, in which the team ran for over 200 yards of offense. But, for General Manager Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Eric Mangini that just wasn’t good enough.

The team acquired RB Kevan Barlow from San Francisco yesterday in exchange for a fourth round draft pick. Barlow passed his physical and joined the team along with another new face TE Walter Rasby. Rasby is an 11-year veteran most recently with the New England Patriots. Mangini expects a lot from Rasby, “I’m looking for a lot of things from the veterans like leadership, experience, toughness and I like the things that he’s done in the running game.”

Barlow joined the team on the practice field about 45 minutes into the afternoon practice. Still learning the playbook, Barlow did not take part in any major drills and only practiced with the quarterbacks in short passing drills.

Mangini said that what he liked about Barlow was that fact that, “he is a bigger back, he catches the ball out of the backfield, he’s got the ability to make people miss.” Mangini went further to add, that Barlow “adds depth and competition to the position.”

It would be surprising though to see the Jets bring in a back like Barlow and not have him become the starter until Curtis Martin is healthy enough to play. Barlow is young and talented and can handle being a number back. Also, he is due a lot of money from his contract in San Francisco to be a backup to RB Cedric Houston or Derrick Blaylock.

Barlow was shocked to find out that he had been traded, but was also excited at the opportunity his new team presents for him. “Yesterday I was getting ready to play the Raiders and today I’m a Jet,” said Barlow in response to the how the last 24 hours have been for him.

Barlow also said that he wasn’t worried about being traded, “coach (Mike Nolan) said don’t listen to the speculation, but I guess things change in a week.” Barlow also said that he loves the fact that he is now having a chance to play with Curtis Martin. Barlow grew up a big fan of Martin’s and since both of them went to the same college, the University of Pittsburgh, he’s thrilled to actually be on the same team as him.

With new faces comes the addition of old faces, as QB Chad Pennington returned to the team for the first time since Wednesday after going home to be with his father who was suffering from an illness. Also returning, was CB Drew Coleman who has missed the last two weeks of practice with an injured right knee.

Pennington did watch some of the game on Saturday night and felt that, “we are improving as a team.” He likes the addition of Barlow because he feels Barlow is, “a big physical guy.” Personally, Pennington feels like he has to work out some details and fundamentals before the Jets next preseason game against the Giants on Friday night at the Meadowlands.

The practice itself can best be described by the word sloppy. The offense was constantly called for penalties and QBs Kellen Clemens and Pennington both ran laps for delay of game and false start penalties respectively. Patrick Ramsey had a good practice hitting WR Mario Hill for a 50-yard completion at one point during practice. Not to be outdone, Pennington threw two touchdown passes; one, was a 34 yarder to WR Jerricho Cothcery and the other was a 20 yarder to TE Doug Jolley.

- RB Kevan Barlow will be wearing the number 31 instead of 32 like he had been wearing in San Francisco.

- K Mike Nugent again looked good today hitting all of his field goal attempts, which were from about 50 yards away.

- Barlow’s first conversation with a teammate on the field was with rookie T D’ Brickashaw Ferguson

- The team practiced on the turf today for all of practice instead of moving onto the grass, like they had been for the last couple of weeks.

- Assistant Defensive Line Coach Bryan Cox was working with DE Darrell Adams and DT Brennan Schmidt after practice teaching them how to push off defenders when the ball is snapped at the line of scrimmage.

- The Jets released WR Curtis Williams and DE Val Barnaby.
