As the Jets prepare to face the Colts this Sunday at Giants Stadium, the returned to Hofstra on Monday to do the Friday walk-through as well as working on goal-line and red zone situations.
Rookie head coach Eric Mangini made it clear that he feels Fridays are critical point in the week. He said he feels working on the red zone and goal-line situations is especially important when Sunday rolls around.
“We saw just how important those situations are last week against the Bills,” Mangini said referring to the Jets Week 3 win in Buffalo. “We went three-for-three inside the red area while we held them to just one of four.”
In the locker room, it appeared obvious that the defense is feeling the brunt of the stress in this week’s preparation. The secondary is preparing for what, in all likelihood, will be the best set of pass catchers they will see all season.
“They have a lot of weapons and it is going to be a huge test for us,” safety Erik Coleman said. “They have a great passing game. Peyton Manning is a hall of famer, Marvin Harrison is a hall-of-famer, Reggie Wayne is a great player, and Dallas Clark is a great pass catching tight end. We’re going to do the best we can and coach is putting together a good gameplan and hopefully if we execute, we’ll be alright.”
With all the hype surrounding the Colts aerial attack, the Jets defense is making sure not to overlook the Indy ground attack.
“People are trying to say the Colts running game is down because they lost a great running back to the free agent market, but they have to understand, they still have two great running backs,” veteran defensive end Bobby Hamilton referring to Dominic Rhodes and rookie Joseph Addai. “They must be doing something right because they have 371 total yards a game and 30 points a game.”
Still, it is quite obvious that the most potent weapon in the Colts arsenal is star quarterback Peyton Manning. Perhaps the most important thing that Manning brings to the table is his ability to read defenses and make calls to put his team in the best position to succeed.
“They’re just real effective at what they do,” defensive captain and linebacker Jonathan Vilma said of the Colts ability to mix run and pass. “Peyton Manning is great at selling the run fake and the pass fake. It is hard to get Peyton Manning off his game.”
Even though the Jets will be lining up across from a ton of talent, the team refuses to use the game as a measuring stick for their own progress. They continue to stress hard work week in and week out.
“If we prepare well, we can do a lot of good things in this league,” Hamilton said.
-While Mangini continued to suggest that each part of the defense is equally important, he did acknowledge that the secondary is usually under a microscope to some extent.
“There’s no one behind them, so when there is a lapse there it’s usually magnified,” Manginin said. “When there is a breakdown in the secondary, Chris Berman is usually talking about it that night.”
-The players seemed very loose today. The were all joking around together and ragging on one another. The two players most involved were defensive tackle Rashad Moore and defensive end/linebacker Bryan Thomas, who always seems to be in the middle of locker room jokes.
After Thomas had went through Moore’s locker in search of something, Moore came over later and threw all of Thomas’s clothes on the floor out of his locker. The rest of the team shared a good laugh over the situation.
-The Jets started their walk through this afternoon with kickoff returns. If anyone had any questions as to whether this drill would be full contact, suffice it to say that the kickoff coverage team featured punter Ben Graham and quarterbacks Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington. Pennington seemed to enjoy his work with the scout team, skipping about and kidding with teammates after the play.
