The New York Jets are working every week towards becoming a better team. This week came a match-up against Cleveland to see if the Jets could beat up on one of the weaker teams in the AFC. This game was not only a match-up of two old friends; Jets head coach Eric Mangini and Browns head coach Romeo Crennel; but it also gave the Jets a chance to head into their bye week with an unbelievable 5-3 record.

The game started great for the Jets, as the team started with an 83-yard drive that took eight and half minutes of game clock. The result was only a field goal but for the Jets, any points in the first quarter will do. Then, for the rest of the half, came a dismal performance by the Jets defense, offense and special teams.

On the following kickoff, K Mike Nugent botched his kick as it went out of bounds. Now, with the Browns starting on their own 40, RB Reuben Droughns exploded on the Jets poor run defense. The Browns had everything going for them, including special teams as K Phil Dawson hit on a 47-yard field goal to tie the game.

The Jets then proceeded to fall flat on their face, as they were able to put together good drives, but couldn’t get any points out of them. QB Chad Pennington threw an interception in Cleveland territory, which led to a Droughns touchdown run. After a great kickoff return by CB/KR Justin Miller, the Jets again couldn’t capitalize as Nugent missed a field goal attempt from 52 yards.

Cleveland used this opportunity to again exploit the Jets defense, but this time using QB Charlie Fry more than Droughns. The Browns took the ball deep into Jets territory but this time Dawson missed a chip shot 26-yard field goal wide left. The Jets took over and decided to let the time run out in the half instead of trying another drive.

The Browns came out in the first half determined to play well against the Jets. New offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson in only a couple of days put together a great game plan for the first half as the Browns went from 1-11 on third downs last week, to 3-6 in the first half alone. Also, the team had only 165 total yards last week against Denver, but already had 153 against the Jets in the first half. “We wanted to play fast and we couldn’t,” said Mangini about the team effort.

The Browns continued their dominance into the beginning of the second half, as the team drove 57-yards in less than four minutes with Frye completing the drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to TE Kellen Winslow. Then after almost three quarters of getting beat in every aspect, the Jets started to put up a fight.

After a Dawson field goal off a RB Leon Washington fumble, Miller returned the kickoff 99-yards to make the score 20-10. The Jets followed this up with a field goal of 47-yards in their next possession. By this point, the whole Jets team had come alive.

The defense was finally stopping the run and Frye was getting sacked and pressured on almost every play. The special teams was not only returning kickoffs for touchdowns, but also giving the offense great starting field position.

In the end though it came down to one play. The Jets lost because they were outplayed, but they had a chance to force this game into overtime and the officials cost them that opportunity. “Anytime you have three turnovers its hard to win,” said Mangini.

TE Chris Baker caught a great pass from Pennington on a fourth and four in the end zone and was pushed out of bounds. The officials determined that Baker would not have landed inbounds if he was not touched. That call ended the game and a great comeback effort by the Jets. In the end though, it was a comeback effort as the Jets did not play a good game and only had a shot in the end because, the Browns are not a good team and could not put the nail in the coffin of the Jets. “We have to be more consistent across the board,” said Mangini after the game. LB Eric Barton summed up what the Jets have to do from here, (we have to) “use the bye week to focus on our technique.”

INSIDER TIDBITS:

- The Jets have a minus 8 ratio in the turnover battle in their four losses this season.

- According to Mangini, the final Jet play with Baker in the end zone was not reviewable by the officials even with it being inside two minutes thereby, negating any chance for the Jets to ask for a review.

- The Jets are 7-11 all time versus the Browns, including 0-1 in the postseason.

- The Browns punted the ball for the first time with 5:44 left in the third quarter.

- The Jets lost the time of possession to the Browns 24:49 to 35:11, even with their first drive lasting eight and a half minutes.

- The Browns finished the game going 7-17 on third downs compared to 5-13 for the Jets.

- The Browns had over double the rushing yards today, 147, than they have averaged so far through six games, 68.2.

- Miller's kickoff return was his second touchdown this season and combined he has 202 yards on those two touchdown returns.

- Every Jet player is upset that the team is 4-4 instead of 5-3, but every one of them blamed it on the team losing the game and said it was “disappointing”.
