Minicamp Day One Tidbits

The Jets held their first minicamp of the 2003 season on Friday for their new draft picks, rookie free agents and a number of veteran players. The no-pads practice was the first chance for the attendees to impress the coaching staff, and right after the 2-hour morning session Jets coach Herm Edwards named a few that particularly stood out.

"On defense, some of the veteran guys that kind of 'flashed' are (S Tyrone) Carter, he flashed on the one interception...Bryan Thomas, he did some good things out there, Andrew Davison, Jon McGraw."

"The rookies, I though (FS Derek) Pagel did a pretty good job, (LB Victor) Hobson...(DT) Dewayne Robertson...I thought (DT Alonzo) Shuler did a pretty good job, and (DE Lance) Gibson did a pretty good job on defense for a young guy."

Edwards noted a number of players that stood out on the offensive side of the ball as well.

"On offense I felt (WR Curtis) Conway and Santana (Moss) had a pretty good day going out for their first day...Tom Nutten, our guard, he did a nice job in pass rushing against Robertson, he blocked him a couple times and did a pretty good job. (TE Chris) Baker I thought did pretty well, (FB Sean) Bennett, the kid we got from the Giants, did some nice things. Lamont (Jordan) obviously did some nice things."

Local product Ian Smart (undrafted rookie RB from C.W. Post) made an impression on the coach. "Smart, the little running back, did good on special teams, on kickoffs he 'flashed' a couple of times," said Edwards.

At the QB position, Edwards singled out rookie Brooks Bollinger for praise.

"The thing I noticed about him right away, is he had very very good touch on the long pass. He threw some long passes today, and threw them where the receiver had a chance to make a play. That's probably one of the hardest throws for a quarterback, the go route, and he threw two of them today that I thought were very very good balls."

Bollinger was tougher on himself, and told Jets Insider.com "I didn't throw the ball very well today. I wasn't very accurate."

Mini-camp will continue on Saturday and Sunday, and Jets Insider.com will be on hand for notes and quotes. CLICK HERE for pictures from Jets minicamp.
