Barlow First To Go

By Jets Staff
February 21st, 2007

The Jets began early housecleaning on Tuesday by releasing disappointing RB Kevan Barlow and OL Trey Teague.

Releasing Barlow will save the Jets $2.75MM against this year’s salary cap. Barlow was reportedly given his walking papers after he refused to take a salary cut. He was originally acquired from the San Francisco 49ers during last year's training camp for a 4th round pick after the Jets found out that Curtis Martin would not be available. Martin ended up sitting out the entire season and will likely retire within the next few weeks.

Barlow ended 2006 with a 2.8 yard per carry average and six touchdowns. As the season progressed he was used less and less with most of the carries going to rookie Leon Washington and second year man Cedric Houston. Look for forgotten fellow running back Derrick Blaylock to be next on the chopping block.

Teague was signed as an UFA last off-season and was slated to be the replacement for Kevin Mawae. However, Teague injured his ankle in minicamp and never saw the field all season. Luckily rookie C Nick Mangold stepped up and had a near Pro-Bowl season for the Jets. The move cutting Teague clears $720,000 from the Jets salary cap this season.

JI has also learned that the team has also re-signed CB Hank Poteat to a one year $635,000 extension. The journeyman Poteat joined the Jets last season as a FA and ended up being a solid contributor all year.

The team also signed S Raymond Ventrone to a reserve/future contract. Ventrone(5-10, 200 Lbs.), from Villanova spent last year on the Pats PUP list after being on their practice squad in 2005 and also playing for NFL europe.
