Former first round pick RB Thomas Jones joins the Jets RB staff.
After being dormant the first three days of free agency, the Jets pulled off a major deal today by trading for talented Bears RB Thomas Jones.
ESPN is confirming the deal where the Jets reportedly will send a 2nd round pick (#37) which was aquired from Washington last year for Smith and the Bears' 2nd round pick (#63). The Jets also have their own 2nd round pick (#59).
The acqusition of Jones definitely upgrades the team's running back corps. The RB was originally a first round pick of the Cardinals (#7) overall in 2000. He played one season in Tampa in 2002 and then signed with the Bears as FA in 2003. In seven season he's rushed for 5384 yards with a 4.0 YPC average. Last year, splitting time with Cedric Benson, Jones rushed for 1210 yards and 6 TD's. He will immediately step into the Jets as the feature back and join 2nd year man Leon Washington and third year man Cedric Houston.
