Practice resumed Tuesday evening as the sun began to set in Hempstead. The quarterbacks continued to share time under center. Kellen Clemens took his reps with the ones, while Chad Pennington was with the twos and Brett Ratliff the threes. After today however, the quarterback competition is still far from clear.

Pennington commented on his experience and how it has helped him with the competition this pre-season.

“I think earlier in my career, maybe my second, third, or fourth year, it would have been something that would be really tough to deal with. I think of Kellen in this situation. That’s why I try my best to lead by example and show him how I’m handling it,” Pennington said.

Experience be damned though, the organization will pick when it’s ready.

After a rough morning practice, Clemens threw two interceptions in the evening session. Shortly after his first pick, he threw an incomplete pass that sailed way out of bounds. In that same drill Pennington fumbled a snap. On another play though, he made an impressive completion to a jumping Brad Smith on the far sideline.

The quarterbacks then shared their time by alternating snaps on the field. Rookie LB Vernon Gholston would’ve likely sacked Pennington before he threw incomplete into the end zone, and Clemens also would’ve been sacked by LB Calvin Pace before he threw his second interception to LB Eric Barton.

After working in the red-zone, the offense backed up every couple of snaps, and practiced Hail Maries. The offense was about 65 yards from the goal line, and the defense was set up in a 2-6-3 zone, spread out such that the first two were about 20 yards from the line of scrimmage.

Clemens’ group had somewhere between 10-20 laterals and backwards passes before LB Bryan Thomas finally batted one of them down and fell on the ball as the crowd applauded the completion of the chaotic play. When Pennington was up, there were only two or three laterals, but Pennington surprised everyone when he faked a lateral in the middle of the melee and turned it up field for about 20 more yards.

Additionally on offense, the ground game looked solid as RBs Jesse Chatman, Leon Washington, Thomas Jones, and Musa Smith all tore up the turf on Hofstra’s soccer field. Chatman may have had the most impressive run when he took a handoff from Pennington and tore up the left side for at least 20 yards.

The Jets will resume practice Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. There will be only one practice Wednesday.

INSIDER TIDBITS

Jets make roster moves

The team announced before Tuesday evening’s practice both CB Andre Woolfolk and S Darnell Bing were waived. Woolfolk joined Gang Green this past March when he signed as a free agent after being waived by Tennessee. Bing signed a reserve/future contract with the Jets in January of 2008 after being waived by Oakland and San Francisco.

To fill the roster spots of Woolfolk and Bing, the team signed S Ron Girault and LB Brandon Renkart, both from Rutgers. Girault, a native of Spring Valley, NY, started 40 games for the Scarlet Knights, recording 271 tackles (160 solo), 1.5 sacks, 9.0 tackles for loss, and 10 interceptions. Renkart was originally recruited to Piscataway as a quarterback, but later switched to a wide receiver, strong safety, and finally a linebacker. As a senior he earned second team All-Big East honors and finished the season 4th on the team with 67 tackles.

Humility at linebacker

Since arriving at camp a little late, first round draft pick LB Vernon Gholston has been simply just trying to get used to everything, adjust, and do the best he can. Not to mention stay humble.

When asked about Coach Mangini saying he was “swimming” the first few practices, he laughed.

“Swimming? Closer to drowning. But you get through and try to study the film and learn afterwards and hopefully make progress,” Gholston said. He also laughed and said “no, definitely not,” when asked if he thinks he is a good player yet. He referred to his adjustments as growing pains, saying he’s “a fresh rookie and trying to learn everything.”

Harris sits out again

LB David Harris who seems to be nursing some sort of injury was held out of his second straight practice this evening. WR Laveranues Coles also sat out but it could have been just for rest.

Any new Favre buzz?

No. In fact, it's been the first practice in several days that there was no Favre talk at all. Quite refreshing to be honest.

However, according to AP, Favre faxed to the NFL offices today his official reinstatement request which means unless he's traded, he can report to Packers camp anytime. There were also published reports this afternoon that the Packers are becoming frustrated that there isn't more interest around the league for the 3 time MVP which means Green Bay's asking price could be lowered real fast.

The Jets return to the practice field tomorrow at 1:30PM for one session open to the public. Check back to JI for a complete report!
