Ravens DC Rex Ryan becomes the 17th Head Coach in Jets History.
Multiple sources have confirmed to Jets Insider.com that Ravens' Defensive Coordinator Rex Ryan has been hired as the new Jets' head coach.
An offical announcement is expected shortly and the team will introduce Ryan to the media on Wednesday. The deal with Ryan is reportedly a four year contract in the $3MM per season range.
Ryan, who is the son of former NFL Head Coach Buddy Ryan, becomes the 17th Head Coach in NY Jets history following Eric Mangin who was fired on December 29th following a late season implosion where the Jets missed the playoffs after starting 8-3. Mangini has since been hired as Heac Coach by the Browns.
The move to hire Ryan had been speculated by many over the past week after reports that he had a great interview with the team. His main competiton had been Giants' Defensive Coodinator Steve Spagnuolo who was hired by the Rams for their Head Coaching position on Saturday. There was a little buzz over the weekend that the team may take a look at the newly available Jon Gruden after he was relieved of his duties in Tampa on Friday, but that never materialized.
It't not yet clear which Jets assistants will be retained but sources report that the team's top priorities are to keep Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan and Special Teams Guru, Mike Westhoff.
