Jets shed more salary, cut LB's Bowens and Kassell

After releasing long time CB David Barrett last week the Jets shed more veteran salary today by releasing LB's David Bowens and Brad Kassell.

Kassell, entering his eighth season in the NFL and his fourth as a Jet was used mainly as a special teamer and was rotated as a reserve occasionally among the Jets LB's. He was on IR for last season with a knee injury.

The Bowens release is more of a surprise as the nine year veteran (2 seasons with the Jets) was a very productive player as he was in all 16 games last year with 31 tackles and 4 sacks.

The moves will reportedly save the Jets over $2MM in cap space for the upcoming season. The team now has over $17MM in cap space. It's possible the Jets could try to re-sign Bowens at a lower price in the future but it also will add to the speculation that the team may try to pursue Ravens UFA Bart Scott who coincidentally is also an inside LB.

In other news, the team also signed the following players to reserve/future contracts: CB Tyron Brackenridge, CB Marquice Cole, DE Sean Conover, LB Nate Harris and DT Nate Robinson.
