The Jets continued their roster purge today by cutting long time veteran WR Laveraues Coles.
The move has not been officialy announced but multiple sources, including Coles are confirming it.
The release of the 31 year old Coles comes as somewhat of a surprise, considering the team guaranteed all of his $6MM salary for 2009 last season, all which will count against the salary cap. They will however, get some of that cap space back when he signs with another team. Coles was seeking a multi-year extension which the Jets obviously were not willing to do.
With Coles gone along with his 70 catches for 850 yards and seven touchdowns last year, the team now has a glaring hole in it's WR corps. The best receiver on the team at present is Jerricho Cotchery who isn't deemed as a #1 guy. Look for the team now to aggressively look for an elite replacement in free agency or via trade. With a reported $37MM in salary cap space, the team definitely has flexibility. Two names that instantly come to mind are Arizona's Anquan Boldin who is reportedly on the trading block and soon to be Bengals FA T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
Stay tuned, The off-season gets more interesting by the minute.
