Jets further strenghened their defense today by trading for Eagles CB Lito Sheppard.
After being an ex-Jet for just a day, the team re-signed G Brandon Moore this evening after failing to land Steelers FA G Chris Kemoeatu. Also, following up on a story reported earlier today, sources are reporting that the Jets have completed a trade that will send Eagles veteran CB Lito Sheppard to Gang Green.
Just when you thought it was safe to go to bed after a dizzying first day of free agency, the Jets keep chugging away. The move to re-sign Moore was a bit surprising after he was let go yesterday. However, after failing to sign Kemoeatu, who at the last minute decided to re-sign with Pittsburgh for less money than the Jets offered, Moore was the next best option. The deal is a much more cap-friendly one than his previous contract at four years for $16MM with $10MM guaranteed.
The next blockbuster came just around 9PM as rotoworld.com confirmed a earlier rumor that was reported by the Daily News that the team completed a trade to bring two-time Eagles Pro Bowl CB Lito Sheppard to the Jets for a fifth round pick in this years draft and a conditional next year that could max out at a second rounder based on incentives.
Overall the Jets get a top tier CB in his prime for a very reasonable price. The 5’10” 28 year old Sheppard was a former first round pick in 2002 out of Florida. He will immediately be the starter opposite Darrelle Revis in the Jets secondary. CB Corey Ivy, who was reported to be signed earlier today, was actually not signed according to multiple sources. He is still in play and if signed would play the nickel. Also, another Raven free agent and Rex Ryan favorite, S Jim Leonhard will be visiting the Jets this weekend and is likely to sign a deal.
