After using their second round pick on massive UMass OL Vladmir Ducasse, the Jets wasted no time releasing veteran Pro-Bowl G Alan Faneca.
The move was reported late Friday by the Star Ledger and was not confirmed by the team at press time.
Although it's been rumored for weeks, the move seems somewhat surprising based on the fact that most experts rank the Jets offensive line as the best in the NFL and removing Faneca without a proven replacement seems risky for a team that was 30 minutes away from a Superbowl berth last season.
Word has been that Faneca's inconsistent pass protection and huge salary made him expendable. The move seems questionable however as a large portion of Faneca's salary is guaranteed and also, the Jets reputation is that of a running team and Faneca is still one of the best in the business as a run blocker even at age 33.
Next on the depth chart behind Faneca is 2 year veteran Robert Turner who was signed originally by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of New Mexico.
