HEMPSTEAD N.Y. - When the name Jerald Sowell is mentioned to the average NY sports fan, the response is likely to be "Who?" Despite being one of the longest tenured players on this team (7 years), fullback Jerald Sowell has mostly been a contributor hidden behind the scenes without any glory or notoriety.

While Richie Anderson had for years been the Jets' featured fullback complimenting superstar Curtis Martin, Sowell excelled on special teams and occasionally got a few reps on offense. Now, after the Jets chose not to re-sign Anderson this off-season, Sowell is instantly the Jets starting fullback. Coach Edwards has shown great confidence in Sowell who has many similar attributes of his predecessor. Size, good hands and fierce blocking are all strengths of this veteran from Baton Rouge Louisiana.

We had a chance to chat with Sowell recently at the close of the June OTA's and spoke to him about stepping in for the popular Anderson and making the transition from career backup to overnight starter.
