Border War in April?
April 23rd, 2003
Border War in April? The Jets and Pats scramble to move up in the draft. The Border War never ends.....Even in April. It seems like both the Jets and Patriots are battling for the Bears number four draft pick. Reports have surfaced that Chicago wants to trade down in Saturdays upcoming NFL draft and other reports earlier today had the Pats close to a deal that would give them the Bears pick for the Pats two first round picks. The Pats also wanted the Bears second round pick as part of the deal but Chicago declined. The Jets have also reportedly talked to Chicago and if a deal can be struck, its likely they will jump all over OSU DT Kevin Williams if he is available. New England is reportedly interested in Kentucky DT Dewayne Robertson.

There are also rumors floating that the Jets have been speaking to their old friend the Tuna down in Dallas about trading up to the number five pick. Parcells has been known to like gathering numerous draft picks as he did during his first draft with the Jets and with a ton of holes to fill at Valley Ranch, a deal with the Jets is not out of the picture.

Despite stories that the Jets were close to giving up one of their first round picks for Detroit DT Shaun Rogers, The Bergen Record reports that it just isnt true. Randy Lange writes that only a third round pick was offered and the Jets really dont covet Rogers.

Is it possible the Jets may use their first pick on an offensive lineman? Maybe. The Daily News reports the Jets are high on Utah OT Jordan Gross and feel he may be the most complete talent in the draft. If all the blue chip defensive talent is gone at the 13th pick and Gross is still there, the Jets may grab him. Iowa G Eric Steinbach may also be a consideration at 13.

Jets Insider.com has learned that the team will be looking for a kicker in the later rounds of the draft to compete with the newly signed Doug Brien. The Jets would love to find a rookie that can handle all the kicking duties but a more likely scenario would be keeping a rookie on the roster for kickoffs and using Brien for FG Duties. If there is no talent worthy of a draft choice the Jets still may bring in a rookie free agent kicker.
