Jets Insider.com was there to cover the final day of the Jets three day minicamp Sunday. We were able to spend a few minutes with Coach Herman Edwards as he broke camp. Heres what he had to say.

Jets Coach Herman Edwards isnt one to gloat or boast when it comes to his team. Hed rather take a wait and see approach.

So it was somewhat surprising to hear him extol the virtues of his players Sunday at the close of the three-day mini-camp for rookies and selected veterans at the clubs Hofstra University headquarters.

“This was probably one of our better mini-camps,” said Edwards, entering his third season as head coach. “Because of the fact that weve upgraded a lot of speed on both sides of the ball. Especially on the defensive line. Some of those guys can run.”

Edwards said it was his intention that by his third camp there would be enough players from the previous two drafts, coupled with the 2003 draftees, so that the older players would be given the chance to rest and recuperate from a long regular season and playoff run. Meanwhile, the younger players would have a chance to assume leadership roles and set an example for the rookies such as No. 1 pick Dewayne Robertson, second round selection, Victor Hobson, and third round choice, B.J. Askew.

“The older guys deserve a rest,” Edwards said. “They know whats expected. They know what to do. And I think they appreciate it. Whats great about it is, most of them showed up anyway. One thing a veteran football player likes to do, while the others guys are practicing; for some reason they always want to show up and watch them. A majority of the older guys were very helpful.”

Overall, Edwards was pleased with the turnout of veterans. Although many were excused, players such as Wayne Chrebet, Kevin Mawae, Marvin Jones and Vinny Testaverde were on hand for most of the weekend.

Edwards gave honorable mention to a few players that stood out this weekend. Mentioned were WR Cecil Moore of East Tennessee State, S Wes Bautovich of Texas A&M (who they will convert to OLB) and former Giants FB Shaun Bennett.

Jets Indsider.coms Kevin Newell and Sean M. Deegan contributed to this report.
