Jets lock up another pick, McGlockton needs to shape up
July 16th, 2003
The Jets announced the signing of seventh round draft pick T Dave Yovanovits and also indicated that newly signed DT Chester McGlockton needs some shaping up before participating in training camp. The Jets locked up their second of six draft picks yesterday by inking seventh round pick Dave Yovanovich (Temple) to a four year deal. Details of the contract were not disclosed. With five days before the start of camp, the Jets still have four draft picks to sign including DT Dewayne Robertson. Jets GM Terry Bradway was quoted as being confident that all picks will be signed by Monday with the exception of maybe Robertson.

Although every Jets fan was very excited yesterday about the news of the Jets signing veteran DT Chester McGlockton, donít expect to see the big man participating in camp drills anytime soon. McGlockton, who was released by Denver over the winter due to salary cap considerations has not been participating in any type of formal off-season conditioning program. Add the fact that he has been running his chain of Denver area fast food restaurants, and you have one Chunky Chet. McGlockton is reportedly 35-40 Lbs over his last season playing weight of 335 and will be working one on one with Jets conditioning coach John Lott to shed some poundage before he officially participates in camp.

Does the signing of McGlockton mean the end for Josh Evans? It doesnít look that way. Bradway has indicated that Evans will be back with the team after he serves his suspension which some say could end sometime in November. "He made 41 workouts this offseason," Bradway said of Evans yesterday.. "We stand behind him as a player and as a person." A fresh Evans working into the defensive line rotation during the grind of the season could be a big boost to the Jets defense. Hopefully Evans is smart enough to keep himself in shape (and out of trouble) during his time off.

The Jets announced one roster move by waiving rookie FA DT Joe Minucci. Minucci, who was signed last month, is a 6-2, 295-pound DT from Delaware University. Minucci is a local product who was born and raised in Lindenhurst, NY and attended St. Anthony's high school.
