Tuesday Tidbits

Another smooth practice on Tuesday morning. Here are a few highlights: On a hot and humid day two of Jets training camp, the Jets players arrived in full pads and worked on some tackling and hitting. New Jets G Tom Nutten sat out due to a contusion on his leg. Nutten was kicked by teammate Kareem McKenzie in the calf yesterday during a drill. The injury is not serious and he should be back to practice tomorrow.

WR Jonathan Carter is lightning fast. If he can be more consistent with his catching skills he may be an integral part of the Jets offense this season. FA Phil McGeoghan has also looked good and may be that “big” receiver the Jets are looking for.

The work that QB Chad Pennington has done to improve his deep ball seems to have paid off. He is showing excellent velocity and accuracy on his deep throws so far. Both Santana Moss and Cecil Moore caught nice deep passes from Chad this morning. Chad did not miss a receiver all morning.

The Jets have been working QB/WR Tory Woodbury at QB after switching him exclusively to WR last year. We are not sure if this is permanent but if it is, the prospects of him making the team are probably a lot less.

CB Donnie Abraham has looked excellent during the first two days. He has been like glue on every receiver he has covered and broken up every catch thrown in his direction.

Coach Edwards sat out a few veterans in the morning session such as WR Curtis Conway and QB Vinny Testaverde. Since he wants to keep his older players fresh, this he will do this throughout camp. Mo Lewis and Curtis Martin will sit out the afternoon session.

PK Doug Brein has nailed every FG attempted and new punter Dan Stryzinski’s punts have been deep and have been hitting the corners. FA running back Ian Smart, struggled on punt returns yesterday. He dropped three attempts but it was in a swirling wind. He will get a lot more attempts before the Jets first game.

Mo Lewis addressed the press after the morning session and said he is feeling great and looking forward to a great season. His hip injury suffered in game 3 of last season is fully healed and he says he has a lot of football left in him. He had several nice plays in the morning session including breaking up a pass over the middle intended for TE Chris Baker.

The Jets afternoon session begins at 3:30 PM.
