The team signed FA CB Troy Grant to a league minimum deal.

Grant, a 5-9, 185-pound product of Tennessee Tech University most recently played with the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe this spring. He recorded 29 tackles for the Admirals in his second season of NFLE action. The San Antonio, Texas native has previously been in NFL training camps with the San Diego Chargers and Indianapolis Colts.

The Jets thought Grant would be a good fit due to his familiarity with the Jets defense. Colts coach Tony Dungy runs the same type of defense that Herm Edwards does stemmed from their time together in Tampa.

Standouts at Jets camp today were S Jon McGraw who had a spectacular pick of an underthrown Chad Pennington bomb to WR Jonathan Carter. The Jets worked on goal line situations and two minute drills today. The hitting was intense and heated. Backup RB LaMont Jordan and G Jonathan Goodwin were two players that looked good. There is a real battle brewing for the staring guard position between new FA veteran Tom Nutten and the youngster Goodwin. The more athletic Goodwin seems to have the slight edge at present. Rookie WR Cecil Moore and veteran LB Mo Lewis continue to have excellent camps.

QB Vinny Testaverde, WR Curtis Conway and RB Curtis Martin rested on Friday afternoon. Rookie FB BJ Askew (scratched cornea) returned to practice today with a protective shield on his helmet. DT Chester McGlockton won’t make the trip to Tokyo. He’ll stay back and continue conditioning

Following up a story from yesterday, former Jets T David Viger, who was released last week and then was wanted back due to the knee injury of T Bobby Brandt, signed a contract with the Detroit Lions today. The Jets will continue to look for another lineman that can long snap. Hey Herm, we hear Trey Junkin available! : )

The Jets have two more practices (they rest on Sunday) before they leave for Tokyo.
