The Jets continued to work on the deep ball during a sunny, sultry session today at Hofstra.
The morning practice was highlighted by several long passes. All three quarterbacks – Chad Pennington, Vinny Testaverde, and Brooks Bollinger – worked the sidelines and middle with great success. Pennington hooked up with Santana Moss a couple of times to perfection, none prettier than a 35-yard dart down the right sideline that brought a huge ovation from the fans. Chad and Santana connected again on another 35-yarder that brought a collective smile to coach Herm Edwards and offensive coordinator Paul Hackett. What weak arm???
Testaverde, displaying some serious zip, hooked up with Jonathan Carter on a corner route that looked like vintage Vinny. Bollinger, the rookie out of Wisconsin, continues to open some eyes. He lofted a 45-yard thing of beauty to Phil McGeoghan that beat the secondary and resulted in a score. All in all it was a crisp day on the FieldTurf. The Jet lag from yesterday seems to be gone.
DT Chester McGlockton participated in several drills today and pressured the quarterback often. The svelte McGlockton, who has reportedly dropped another five pounds, even had a sack of Pennington during the 7-on-7 drills.
Newly acquired guard Tom Nutten has sat the past two practices due to a shoulder stinger. Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet was given the day off. Also, rookie RB B.J. Askew suffered dehydration during yesterday’s afternoon session and was rested this morning. Rookie WR Cecil Moore has been bothered by a strained quad and has missed several drills.
The team will practice in full pads during the afternoon session.
