Jets go fishing and catch a snapper: With TE James Dearth as the only healthy long snapper on the roster, the Jets signed a free agent who can snap for kicks and also play offensive line. New York - The New York Jets today announced they have signed free agent offensive lineman/long snapper Patrick Smith. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Smith, a 6-5, 300-pound product of the University of Central Arkansas, signs with the Jets as a rookie free agent. The native of La Mesa, California earned NCAA Division II All-South Region honors in 2002 as a center in his senior season for the Bears.

With linemen Bobby Brandt and Dennis O'Sullivan hurting the Jets needed another long snapper and some more depth on the offensive line.
