Tuesday Camp Tidbits

After a day of rest on Monday, the Jets were back at it today on a very hot and humid Tuesday.

Steambath is the best word to describe the conditions as the Jets returned to two-a-days on Tuesday. A few players were affected by the hot conditions. DT Shaun Ellis was dehydrated and left practice early. DT James “Tank” Reed, who is asthmatic was seen getting aid and drinking a lot of Gatorade on the sidelines. Reed later returned to practice after a short rest.

The Jets waived former Arena League kicker Clay Rush today. Rush, who was being considered as a kickoff specialist got beat out by Danny Kight. During kickoff practice today, Kight was booming his kickoffs well into the end zone on almost every attempt. K Doug Brien had a tough day by getting blocked on one of his three FG attempts by Ray Mickens. The Jets may very well keep both Brien for FG’s and Kight for kickoffs. The third scenario is that both kickers may get the boot if a viable replacement who can handle both duties becomes available. Keep your eye on the loser of the competition in Indianapolis between Mike Vanderjagt and Brett Conway. The one who does not stay a Colt may be wearing greens soon thereafter. Former Giants K Matt Bryant has alos been metioned as someone the Jets may take a look at.

Despite the sweaty conditions, Tuesday’s practice was very upbeat and smooth. The practice started with a slew of drills. Chad Pennington was seen hollering in support while the offensive linemen did their blocking drills on the sled. SS Sam Garnes was also very vocal during 7 on 7’s encouraging his teammates and also trash talking to the offense.

Players who stood out were the following: WR Phil McGeoghan had a great practice catching several balls including a 40 yard TD on a perfectly thrown deep pass from rookie QB Marquel Blackwell (BTW: Edwards mentioned Blackwell will get a shot to play on Saturday after riding the pine for two straight games). Rookie RB Raymonn Adams had a nice sweep right that resulted in a 35 yard untouched TD. WR Santana Moss continues to impress. He basically caught everything thrown in his direction. This really could be the year we see greatness form the former first round pick. The coach also praised CB Aaron Beasley today saying that he is having an excellent camp and finally seems to be totally comfortable in the Jets system. He also mentioned that the secondary as a whole is coming together nicely and as a unit are very close on and off the field.

The WR race is getting a little more interesting. Two weeks ago I would have said that rookie WR Cecil Moore is a lock to make the team. However, after nursing nagging injuries for the past week, and getting very few reps, his opportunity is waning. The Jets also announced that WR Jonathan Carter injured his knee in the game on Saturday and will get an MRI today to see the severity. This may hurt his chances of making the squad if he can’t bounce back fast. CB Jamie Henderson is also banged up with a sprained left MCL. The Coach doesn’t think the sprain is serious and he is day to day at this point.

Good news is that DT Chester McGlocton participated in full contact 7 on 7 drills today and will get some playing time against the Saints. Rookie LB Mark Brown (hamstring), who Coach Edwards is very high on, returned to duties as well today an should also play Saturday. Edwards is very anxious to see Brown in game situations. DE Bryan Thomas (ankle) was also back to work today and will play on Saturday as well.

The Jets also announced that they have also waived Rookie T Bobby Brandt. Brandt signed in the spring as a rookie free agent but was hampered with nagging injuries.
