Herm addresses Victor Green rumors
August 19th, 2003
Coach Edwards’ Tuesday morning press conference touched on several subjects including rumors floating that the team was ready to sign former Jets S Victor Green. Jets President Jay Cross also took a beating from WFAN’s Mike Francesa regarding the new $50.00 waiting list fee while on Francesa’s radio show earlier this afternoon.

“No we are not” was Coach Edwards’ answer when he was asked by Jets Insider.com if the team was close to resigning former longtime safety Victor Green “He’s not a Jet.” When pressed a little more, Edwards became a bit Parcelian or even Clintonesque in his responses. “I have not spoken to him and or his agent” he went on to say. That’s not to say that Terry Bradway or Mike Tannenbaum hasn’t.

We’d say at this point the chances are 50/50 that Green will come back. The Jets definitely need more depth at this position. Especially since rookie S Derek Pagel sprained his ankle and looks far from ready to play in a real game. FA Tyrone Carter has also looked far from spectacular. One problem with Green is that he doesn’t play special teams and the Jets want to fill that roster spot with a player that can do so. Green has been quoted in the media today that he has not been contacted by the team and if his agent has, he wasn’t aware of it.

Herm also shot down rumors that the team was considering bringing back T Jumbo Elliot. “No. We’re not looking at him either.” was Edwards’ answer when asked about Elliot. Jumbo is still unsigned despite rumors that he might be joining Bill Parcells down in Dallas.

For those of you that missed Jets President Jay Cross’ interview with Mike Francesa, I compare it to a puppy being fed to a lion. Francesa was ruthless in his questioning of Cross regarding the Jets new $50.00 fee for season ticket waiting list members. Francesa called the new fee the “biggest larceny he has ever seen a team inflict on their fanbase”. Despite a lot of silence from the Jets’ President as Francesa lambasted him, we have to give Cross kudos for keeping cool under fire. Cross admitted if the Jets could do it over they probably would have set up the program differently. Cross also said for the first time that the current policy may be adjusted.

The Jets practice today from 2:30 – 4:30 and it’s open to the public.
