Mawae Injured

Jets Center Kevin Mawae sustained a knee injury during yesterday’s practice. Details on this as well as notes and quotes from Wednesday camp at Hofstra.

Jets C Kevin Mawae “tweaked” his left knee at the close of yesterday’s practice. Despite a little soreness, the injury is not serious. Jets Insider.com spoke to Mawae during the lunch session today and he seemed fine. He wore an ace bandage but showed no limp or pain. Mawae told us that besides resting it today, he’ll expects to be back full force tomorrow. Coach Edwards reiterated Mawae’s assessment during his morning press conference. The tweak was a non-contact injury.

Coach Edwards was not happy with the tempo of yesterdays practice and made the team aware of it. He expects a better effort today and lectured the team on it during the team’s morning meeting. “I think today we have a much better practice” Said Edwards. He went on: “I stressed that this morning to them and I hope they heard the message”. Word is the message was very loud and stern. The Jets will practice a little longer today and will be in full pads.

Edwards admitted today that he is concerned about depth at certain positions. His main areas of concern are at LB and OL. “We need some backup linemen to step up” said the Coach. “They have an opportunity to be here and if they don’t step up and do it, then you have to bring in other players”. Edwards went on to say that he hates to have to resort to bringing in players via the waiver wire or by trade. He prefers to have the players that have been here succeed and be a part of the team. “There are going to be a lot of players floating around next week [After the first round of team cuts]” Edwards noted. “You want to use the guys here and not look at other guys. I don’t want to do that. I hate going somewhere else to get a guy. I would rather have a guy who has been here two or three months that has worked his tail off to make the team, but if you can’t do it that way, you have to look elsewhere”

Don’t look for the Jets to bring in any more kickers. The coach announced that Doug Brien is going to handle both kickoffs and placekicking until further notice. When asked if the team was still looking for a big leg for kickoff duties, the coach responded: “No. Doug is our man. We don’t plan on bringing anyone else in”. While questioned at lunch, Brien was obviously very happy with the confidence the team has placed in him. He also gave props to Coach Mike Westhoff for being diligent with him and helping him succeed.

Practice times have changed. Today practice is from 2-4 PM and is the same time tomorrow. They are both open to the public. There is no practice on Friday.
