Jets Win Game, Lose Pennington
August 23rd, 2003
Chad Pennington fractured and dislocated his left (non-throwing) wrist late in the first half of Saturday's pre-season game against the New York Giants, and early media speculation has him out at least 6-8 weeks and possibly more. Pennington came down hard on his left hand after being tackled by Brandon Short, and came off the field in obvious pain. After x-rays at the stadium, he was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital for surgery. Jets starting DE John Abraham also left the game with back spasms. Seventeen-year veteran Vinnie Testaverde steps in as the starter, moving rookies Brooks Bollinger (Wisconsin) and Marquel Blackwell (S. Florida) up the depth chart to second and third string, respectively.

The Jets won a sloppy game, edging their co-tenants 15-14 on a 2-yard Chad Brinker touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Brinker fumbled the 2-point conversion try as the Jets attempted to stretch their lead to 3. It was the 8th consecutive win for the Jets in their annual pre-season series against the Giants. Gang Green's starting D was torched by Giants' QB Kerry Collins (13-23, 198 yards, 2 TDs) on an 80-yard TD pass to Ike Hilliard in the second quarter, and looked shaky at times. Donnie Abraham and Sam Cowart led the defense with 7 tackles each. First round draft pick DT Dewayne Robertson had a quiet game, facing double teams for much of the night.

The Jets special teams shone on the night, downing 3 Dan Stryiynski punts within the Giants' 5 yard line, nailing 3 Doug Brien field goals and tacking on a 40-yard Albert Johnson kickoff return. New starting safety Jon McGraw had a solid game, delivering several crunching hits, bringing down Dorsey Levens behind the line and hauling in an interception. Other notables were Wayne Chrebet (3 catches for 48 yards) and Lamont Jordan (6 rushes for 35 yards), who looked strong gaining tough yards. Pennington's night ended after a lackluster performance saw him go 4-12 for 58 yards.
