After surgery to repair damage from a broken/dislocated wrist, Coach Edwards told the media today that the Jets QB will likely miss 10-12 weeks of action.

A somber yet optimistic Herm Edwards addressed the media on a conference call today to relay the bad news. His goldenboy, QB Chad Pennington will be lost until at least mid November, and maybe longer. Pennington suffered a fracture/dislocation to his left wrist last night against the Giants when he was hit as he threw a pass. While trying to break his fall during the tackle by Giants LB Brandon Short, Pennington’s left wrist got caught in the turf and resulted in the injury.

Pennington underwent surgery last night by team Orthopedist Dr. Ken Montgomery at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. The damage to Pennington’s wrist was to the two, three, four and five metacarpal bones located under his knuckles. There was also ligament damage as well. Seven pins were inserted into the hand and the QB will be in a splint for a week then in a cast for at least another 3-4 weeks.

Pennington is still in the hospital today and under pain medication. He has not been available for comment. There is a possibility that he could be released as early as this evening.

Edwards commented that the team will sign another veteran QB as soon as possible and is reviewing film of several candidates today to see who might be the best fit. He told the media that he was NOT considering former Jets QB Ray Lucas and denied any interest in Jeff George, Elvis Grbac or even Glenn Foley. The only QB Edwards admitted he was considering was Todd Husak, who was on the team earlier this spring but was released just before training camp. Husak knows the system but isn’t considered a guy who can step in and take over if Testaverde was injured. When asked if the team would consider trading for a veteran, Edwards replied that option might be a possibility.

The best case scenario would have Pennington coming back on week nine on November 2, ironically against the Giants. Worst case, if the injury doesn’t heal as expected would be missing the season.

Despite the fact that new Jets starter Vinny Testaverde needs work, Edwards told the media that Testaverde will only likely play the opening offensive series against the Eagles next Thursday.

The injuries to DE John Abraham (lower back spasm) and QB Brooks Bollinger (leg) are not serious. Both players should not miss any practice time this week.
