The Jets announced Monday they have cut the following nine players: LB Vince Alexander, RB’s Sean Bennett, Chad Brinker and Ian Smart, DE Lance Gibson, OT Isaac Herring, WR’s Tavon Mason and Michael Oliva, and tight end Dallas Neil.
The most notable cut of the day is obviously RB Ian Smart, the local product from CW Post. Although the Coach mentioned today that he thought Smart has ability and can play at the professional level, he just didn’t show enough in this camp to make the team. Especially since the team needed and extra roster spot for another QB. Edwards said he was confident that Smart may end up on another NFL roster or even in the Canadian League.
The Jets also re-signed QB Todd Husak who was on the team earlier this year but was cut just prior to the start of Training Camp. Edwards today did not rule out looking at other QB’s if any good fits become available from the waiver wire.
Edwards told the media that he spoke to Chad Pennington last night and the QB was in good spirits. He was released from the hospital and is with his family. He isn’t expected to be at the Hofstra Complex for at least a week, after the pins in his hand are removed and his hand is placed in a cast.
The Jets’ active roster currently stands at 71 players including six exemptions for players allocated to NFL Europe. The final 53-man roster for the regular season must be set by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 31.
