Here are some tidbits leading up to the Jets-Eagles matchup tonight.
Jets/Eagles Pre Game Notes and News: Don’t tune in late tonight because if you do, you will likely only see the reserves play for both teams. New starting QB Vinny Testaverde will only play 10-12 plays and the starting offensive and defensive units won’t play much more. With backup Brooks Bollinger out with a knee injury, QB’s Todd Husak and Marquel Blackwell will split time behind the center for the rest of the game. No matter how well they play, both will likely be waived upon final cuts. Newly acquired QB Jamie Martin is not expected to play. For the Eagles, QB Donovan McNabb won't play at all. QB Koy Detmer will start.
There are several players on the bubble that need to impress tonight to make the final cut. The most in intriguing battles are for the final WR and RB spot. At WR, Jonathan Carter is battling Phil McGeoghan, and Cecil Moore. Our prediction is that McGeoghan will edge the rest out. Moore is a likely practice squad candidate. We also won’t rule out the Jets filling the spot with a FA from waivers.
At RB, rookies Raymonn Adams and Jonathan Reese are battling for a roster spot. Adams at present has the edge. At LB, if the Jets decide to keep seven on the roster, Kenyatta Wright (who is starting tonight for an injured Kelvin Moses), Khary Campbell and rookie Mark Brown are fighting for that spot. The Coach loves Brown and he may be the surprise choice. At Safety, rookie Wes Bautovich is trying to steal that last spot from veteran Tyrone Carter. Rookie S Derek Pagel has not had a good camp but the Coaches like his talent and work ethic and he should make the squad. We predict all 2003 draft choices will make the team including seventh round pick G Dave Yovanovits who is raw but has had a good camp.
Although final cuts are not due until Sunday afternoon, Coach Edwards indicated that the Jets will announce their final roster on Friday afternoon.
