Jets third string QB Marquel Blackwell, who could very well be unemployed by tomorrow afternoon, made the Jets' decision a little harder. Blackwell threw two touchdown passes, leading the Jets' backups to a 17-9 victory over Philadelphia's reserves in the final preseason game for both teams.
Blackwell ended the day 7-of-12 for 111 yards. He tossed TDs of 8 yards to B.J. Askew and 39 yards to Jonathan Carter. Jets starting Vinny Testaverde and all of the first team players were told by Coach Edwards right before the game that they had the night off. None of the Eagles starters played either.
Jets QB Todd Husak played most of the second half and completed 5 of 6 passes but for only 25 yards. The Jets didn’t score any points the second half but neither did Philly. The Jets defense held the Eagles to just three first half field goals by David Akers.
S Tyrone Carter improved his chances in making the team by intercepting Eagles QB Koy Detmer in the first half. Blackwell then took the team 50 yards for a score, capping the drive with an 8 yard TD pass to Askew. Detmer was later intercepted again by CB Andrew Davison which resulted in a 39 YD TD pass from Blackwell to Carter. CB Jamie Henderson also had an INT in the third quarter against Eagles third string QB AJ Feeley.
The Jets now get ready for their nationally televised opener against Washington, next Thursday. Look for final cuts to hit the wire Friday afternoon.
