The Jets announced thay have waived journeyman QB Jamie Martin just a week after he was signed to back up Vinny Testaverde. To replace Martin, the team brought back a familar face.
New York City - The New York Jets announced today they have signed free agent quarterback Marquel Blackwell and waived quarterback Jamie Martin.
Blackwell was waived on August 30, 2003 after signing with the Club as a rookie free agent on May 2, 2003. The 5-11, 207-pound quarterback out of the University of South Florida completed 11-of-18 pass attempts for 154 yards with two touchdowns in three games this preseason.
Martin, a 6-2, 205-pound quarterback is an eight-year NFL veteran who signed with the Jets on August 26, 2003.
Jets Insider.com is not surprised by this move. While observing Martin in pratice this week, it seemed he was struggling picking up the Jets West Coast offense. Martin looked confused, tentative and in Tuesday's practice alone, we observed him throwing 4 interceptions during a team scrimmage.
Blackwell is probably the best choice this week as a back up to Testaverde. He's been learning the system since July and has looked comfortable running the offense while starting for the Jets in thier final pre-season game in Philadelphia last week. During that game he led the team to two touchdowns.
Unfortunately for Blackwell this move is likely temporary until the team finds a better veteran QB fit. Look for the team to bring in a few free agent candidates when they return from Washington. Former Eagles QB Tim Hasselbeck and former Jet Neil O'Donnell are two names that come to mind.
The team leaves by train today at 1PM and will arrive in Washington around 4. Team meetings will follow leading up to the game tomorrow at 9PM.
