Jets top pick Dewayne Robertson
When the Jets traded with the Chicago Bears yesterday they told the media they had four players in mind. However, they got the man they really wanted by selecting Kentucky DT Dewayne Robertson
with the number four pick.
There were tense times at NY Jets CENTCOM all Saturday morning while rumors swirled that the Patriots were close to a deal with the Detroit Lions for their pick (#2) and would steal Robertson from Gang Green. ESPNs John Clayton even went as far as saying that there was a 75% chance the Lions-Pats deal would get done. At around 12:15PM, there were huge sighs of relief all over Jets nation when NFL Paul Tagliabue announced Detroit had selected Michigan WR Charlie Rodgers. Then, when Houston selected Miami WR Andre Johnson with the third pick, the Jets knew they had their man in the bag.
With Robertson, (6ft 1in-317Lbs) the Jets get the highest rated DT in the draft and a huge boost to their long time underachieving defensive line. During his final season in Kentucky last year, Robertson was named second-team All-Southeastern Conference after recording 48 tackles (34 solos), and five sacks. At the combines in February, Robertson ran a 4.84 40yard dash and benched 225-pounds 30 times. He will likely be an instant starter lining up next to either Jason Ferguson or Josh Evans.
All in all, a great job by Bradway and company. After a tumultuous off-season, its without a doubt a very satisfying day at Hofstra. The team secured a premier player that will likely be a conerstone on the line for years to come at the same time also trumped the Patriots, their fierce division rival.
The next Jets pick will be in the second round, #53 overall.
